Northeast Amateur Drivers/Drifters

This thread is a call to anyone who is *NOT* a pro at driving/drifting the twins.

I have always wanted to learn everything about driving a car. Driving a car the way it is supposed to be driven. And to get the most out of what it has to offer and to push it to its limits. I never had a chance to run in the driving/racing circles so i never got a chance to learn all the tricks of the trade. Whatever i know so far is basically through reading, youtube and practice. I started searching for threads that talk about drifting and racing, and realized there was a HUGE gap in skills that i have compared to the skills of people on these threads. I obviously felt i dint belong there atleast untill i reach a certain skill level.

I am sure a lot of fellow drivers in this forum feel this way. So I am starting this thread in hopes of rounding all of us up and help each other improve our skills together.

best thing to do is just get out there and practice, days like today are good for drifting if you know any open parking lots where cops won't try to hit you with a shit load of tickets. you really get to feel the limits of these cars in the rain too. I try and alternate on weekends between going on back roads and feel for grip or going somewhere to practice drifting, sometimes I get lucky and do both. on dry days really try and get used to your e brake because it's your best friend on these low powered cars. ken gushi has a vid on youtube where he teaches someone and he describes very well step by step what you need to do if you're not sure where to start. Enjoy your car because out of the 17 cars I've owned my frs is by far the best.

We have a novice track day coming up on June 19th. There will be in-car mentors there. You should signup! See the AZP Track Event thread!

Our day is aimed directly at NOVICES, we will have some of the best most qualified track mentors from around the country, including Aaron Povoledo giving the classroom who is a professional coach and Grand-Am driver.

I looked into Club Loose. From their videos and pictures it seemed like they are a club of skilled people. And i have not drifted once in my life! not deliberately atleast. I was looking for way to get started and do it the right way.

I need to find these empty abandoned parking lots without cops or CCTV. I live near Rutgers University, New Brunswick. If anyone knows of such a place around here, and would like to meet up for a drifting lesson (self taught ofcourse!) please comment!

They have different groups for drivers of different skill levels. The videos are obviously of the more experienced drivers, but they run what is called C group and people with no drifting experience whatsoever run it all the time.

Look into the Friday night events held once a month, that is where you will get the most seat time as a beginner and the entry fee is peanuts.

Seriously, getting caught street drifting is so not worth the attempt. My suggestion is simply don't do it.

Club loose has three classes.. A B and C group. Plenty of first timers come out and drive C group, and they are always willing to throw a skilled driver in the car with you to show you the ropes. They're a fantastic organization.

I am not too far from there if you ever want to swing by East Rutherford we can have a boys day out, the places I go to aren't abandoned but as long as there isn't too much time spent at any of them it's great practice. track experience is definitely the best, I'm hoping to hop into club loose before the summer ends just got to budget the extra cash. But if you ever want some quick pointers I'm here.

Thanks for the info guys. I have emailed Club Loose for some information about the track events. I will definitely show up at the next event. I have a stock BRZ and do not have any mods planned in the next few months atleast. I was wondering if its ok to drift with a stock car. I know i will have to get wheels at some point but not sure when i would need them by. Any thoughts on that? Those are gonna cost me a lot so i have to plan my budget out accordingly.

Yes that will be awesome! I am in Jersey City a lot so that should not be a problem. I would really want to brush up on the basics and get those right before i can show up at the track.

Have you ever seen all the skid marks in the Rutgers Stadium lot?
I also know of a couple huge abandoned parking lots in an industrial park just north of Rutgers, about a 5 min drive from Livy campus. If you're still interested, I'll be back in the Rutgers area this fall and we can check it out then.

The car will be perfectly fine to drift stock. Since it will be your first time, you don't need a spare set of wheels/tires, but it definitely wouldn't be a bad idea. Your biggest concern should be damaging the car. Drifting is pretty tough on bodywork, and a $2000 240sx off craigslist is cheaper than $4000 worth of bodywork on a brz.
