Hello everyone,

Noob question. Does the ft86 have a Vtec or VVTL-i feature, where it "kicks in" after a certain RPM.

The Zx6 comes with Subaru's DAVCS, but no it is not like vtec or VVTL-i which has variable lift properties.

You may also want to search the web for toyotas variable intake system. It has not been proven that it will be used in the BRZ/FR-S but you may perhaps find it interesting. It may also explain the torque curve for this car.

Apart from Honda, you most likely won't be seeing a stage cam shift again in engine development. Even so the cam switch point is so mediocre now they give you a light to tell you that "VTEC just kicked in yo" (12 Civic Si).

BMW and others have variable valve lift mechanisms in which they can control an engine based on valve lift then a throttle plate. Fiat's Multi-Air is another unique variable lift design currently adopted to intake valves. In the coming years expect more systems of the like to be implemented by companies including Honda.

For high rev engines apparently fully variable lift/duration mechanisms cause a lot of stress and friction, so it's possible that a 2 stage lift system appears again. However with the advent of direct injection, the benefits are reduced, so I predict we'll see manufacturers go all or nothing: a variable geometry cam lobe rather than intermediate rockers, like Ferrari, or just a single cam with phasing, which apparently works fine on the LFA.
