Oil filter threading stripped

Hey guys,

Not a good day for my BRZ. What started as a simple oil change turned into a much bigger issue when I found that the threading on the oil filter housing was stripped after I pulled off the old filter. I also found that some the surface of the seal was scratched and chipped :(. I am currently unable to obtain a seal with the new filter so my car is not drivable.

I believe the old filter (fram) was the culprit of the stripped threading but the cause of the surface damage is still to be determined. My questions are:

Does anyone know if the threading key is replaceable? It appears as if it can be unscrewed. If it is it would save me a tow to the dealer.

Any chance the dealer would cover this? It was definitely the filter that cause the threading to strip, but as I replaced it myself I'm sure they would fight that.

I'm posting this on my phone but ill upload pics once I get home.

Thanks guys,

David

Did you change the oil last? I would think you would notice if it was cross threaded...
Interested to see pics. Bummer man.

As far as fixing it... maybe there's a die big enough to use, but you'd have to worry about shavings. On top of that, depending on how "screwed" it is would it be enough to salvage the existing piece??

Threading key is replaceable, it's called a filter union. Subaru P/N: 15018AA150

Last oil change i didn't see any cross threading - and I don't remember the filter being tough to get on. But yeah shavings are what I'm most worried about.

Wow this is great thank you!

it wasn't on an frs so I don't know if that particular one is removable, but I have removed an oil filter stud once. if you want to save the one you have, you need two bolts that will fit onto it, tighten the two nuts together and use a wrench on the bottom nut to loosen the stud. if the stud is stripped and you can't reuse it you could use vise grip pliers to unscrew the stud if it is removable. I guess the problem might be finding a new stud since the car is so new.

I would use a OEM filter as well... it's like $8 at the dealer.

Here are the pics - the first image you'll see the stripped threads and the second is the surface chips.

According to this diagram the stud is part of the entire outing timing housing :(

Where did you get this P/N, I can't find it online

Even if that part is not available I wonder if you could unthread the boss for the filter and clean up the threads off the car? It looks like it might unscrew?

I have heard of issues and avoided Fram for many years. You can't go wrong with a stock filter. First impression is that the filter was over tightened when installed.

Good Luck!

Yep I'm going to attempt to unthread tomorrow, and seat the oil filter on that. Otherwise it's off to the dealership

I have a hard time believing the filter union is stripped, that part should be made out of hardened steel. The discoloration is more likely material from the threads on the filter itself. Can we get a pic showing the side of the filter union instead of the top of it?
