When do you need new lugs?

So i've been shopping around for new wheels. Is it required that you buy a new set of lugs if you get larger wheels? For example, using the OEM lugs on 17x8's - is that possible/safe?

Also, hubrings? are those needed/advised? Wouldnt a centercap cover it anyway?

New lug nuts will depend on wheel style, not size. Some wheels have skinnier holes machined for the lug where an oem acorn style nut has too large of an outside diameter to fit in the wheel. If you're unsure, contact the wheel manufacturer or distributor to confirm if stock lugs will fit.

Hub centric rings are needed if the inside bore of the wheels aren't the same diameter as your factory hub. They fill the gap between them (centering the wheel to the hub) and cost less than $20. Most wheel distributors have them, all you have to do is ask. The center caps do not provide the same function as hub centric rings. The rings are functional. The caps are aesthetics.

I'm running 17x8 RPF1's on the stock lugs (factory lock/socket is a TIGHT fit but it works) without centering rings and they're 100% fine.

Taper seat lugs do a really good job of centering the wheel as long as you tighten them correctly (bit by bit in a star pattern).

There's definitely no harm in running centering rings, but if you plan on tracking the car they might end up melted.

Like "NotSoJDM" said, check to see if the wheels are designed for the same type of lug (ball seat, taper seat or square seat), and what the clearances are like. Stock wheels/lugs are taper seat.

Just kidding. Just match the lug nut to wheel. Our oem nuts are tapered so they work with most modern aftermarket wheels.

I would check every 5k miles that the lugs are properly torqued down. You don't really need to do anything else. Some aftermarket wheels have smaller lug holes and the OEM lugs will not fit even though they're conical seat.
