flipping the headrest

OK, so i have done a few track days now in the FR-S and each time I end up flipping the headrest around backwards to make "room" for the helmet. With the headrest in the normal position it feels like it pushes my head down with the helmet on which makes sense because it is designed to provide restraint for an bare head.

With the headrest flipped around though it feels like there is very little head restraint with a helmet. Granted, it is more than with headrest removed, which is why i run it flipped.

Has anyone looked for or found an alternative head rest that works well with the stock seats and helmets?

Eventually I will be doing a back half cage and 4 point ASM belts (while the car is dual purpose). For cost reasons I would like to be able to use the stock seats as long as possible.

I found raising the headrest to maximum height with it oriented normally doesn't push as much with helmet on. The headrest pushing down makes me not look as far down track.

I remember reading somewhere that the headrest was designed to be flipped around while wearing a helmet.

As i said, I have been fliping it. But with it flipped it does not provide much if any real head restraint and does not feel much safer than having no head rest.

Has anyone looked for an alternative that will fit the factory seat?

I am concerned about that too. You could also try putting the seat more upright so your head/helmet is closer to the headrest. Alternatively angle the seat back more and raise the headrest so there is more room for your helmet (without flipping the headrest).

I'm going to try some different helmets. A racing specific helmet (snell SA rated) may have a flatter profile at the back than a motorcycle helmet, which tend to be elongated for aerodynamics. Then maybe I won't need to flip the headrest.

I'd stay away from a 4 point. Most track day organizers won't even let you on track with a 4 point.
