Strong Celica successor

The new Toyota 86 GT offers driving fun, emotion and adrenalin - for less than 30,000 €. First ride with the Japanese artist drift and successor of the legendary Celica!

By Georg Kacher on the former Grand Prix circuit on the outskirts of Madrid, Jarama, the new Toyota GT 86 show what he draufhat - and whether he actually in the footsteps of MR2 , Celica and Supra runs. Against a Porsche Cayman does the Toyota on a timed lap, but not random, but the GT 86 has an even lower center of gravity, a more aggressive axle load distribution, a more direct steering and a higher rotating piston engine. The ****pit is sporty, but not spartan. The driving position seems likeable old school: the steering wheel without multi-function, classical floor brake, large round instruments, great seats, right next to the gearshift buttons for traction control and stability program. Only the start-stop button and the standard navigation system may provide a cross reference to the production in 2012.

The two-liter flat-six of the Toyota GT 86 sounds bad, throaty and metallic than the good of the Japanese inline four cylinder. He stands at 200 hp while the food properly, but when Subaru is already the next stage with a supercharger and 300 hp. Specifically for the GT 86 is a lightweight and compact front-mid engine was designed, its high compression ratio of 12.5:1 only by the Toyota D4-S direct injection was possible. The maximum torque of 205 Nm is available across the cloud boundary at 6600 tours available, but it is 90 percent of the shear force distributed over an unusually wide plateau, which reaches 2200-6200 rpm.

The GT 86 particularly fascinated by his ride. This car has two steering wheels: one is circular, the other is operated with the right foot. Of hire because, Lupfer, and with a lot of gas across the curve. Toyota extends snappy turn-in and a gentle step on the pedal to the rear vorbeizutreiben with grandeur at the apex. The only condition: The flow of torque must not separate. The 1200 pound lightweight coupe sprints in 7.2 seconds from 0 to 100 km / h and is 230 km / h fast. The Mixverbrauch is 6.0 liters, the base price should be less than 30,000 euros. . You might want to take the manual switch is an equally aggressive staggered six-speed automatic transmission order, which is operated via paddles on the unusually small steering wheel (diameter of only 365 mm)
More information about the new Toyota GT 86 is available in AUTO BILD 5 / 2012 - from Friday , 3 Trade in February 2012.

From the source article: "Der Zweiliter-Boxer des Toyota GT 86 klingt böser, kehliger und metallischer als die braven Reihenvierzylinder der Japaner."

It translates to:
"The Toyota GT 86's two liter boxer sounds meaner, throatier and more metallic then other strong Japanese inline four cylinders."

It doesn't say flat six, don't know why the OP's translation has it, unless they made a goof and edited the original doc after the translation was done.

I like the hint that Subaru is working on a supercharged version :)

Kunzite 01-30-2012 05:04 PM

That's a google translate "feature" ;)
0-100 in 7.2 and 6l/100km? One sounds slow-ish, the other to good to be true.

Thanks for posting!

7.2 secs 0 to 62 MPH? Dang..it's getting slower...but hey these are still prototypes. Nobody has done a proper 0 to 60 or 1/4 time.

Europe fuel consumption methods are out-dated.

serialk11r 01-31-2012 05:09 AM

I wouldn't say that...IMO the only relevant figures when it comes to fuel consumption are drivetrain type (hybrid or not), weight, and constant speed highway cruise fuel consumption in top gear. I guess EPA city test would be fine.

It's all speculation. If it's true, I hope it comes out next year.

I wonder if it's because the FR-S isn't making much power above 6500? I read a review that said the last 1k rpms is powerless so I guess that could affect the 0-60 time.

Can one of our German members hook up translation?
