centering rings necessary?
 

What are your takes on centering rings for aftermarket wheels? I've never used them (always had wheels that fit to a specific model) and am not sure if they are necessary. I'm going to be running motegi traklite wheels and I believe they may be necessary.

oh well, I'm jsut going to install the hubcentric rings and not look back. looks like the bore on my current wheels are different than the hub

never have used them, never had a problem. just torque correctly.

100% you should use them

Makes putting the wheel on a lot easier. no reason not to use at least some plastic ones.

I bought a set and have been too lazy to put them on for the last 6 months. Hasn't been any problems with hard street driving. I got plastic this time in the hopes they are easier to get off when I switch wheels. Aluminum I had in the past would almost weld to the hub whether I used anti sieze or not, would have to take a hammer and screw driver and chisel them off.

You should talk with a professional like Tire Rack or Discount Tire. I bought some Enkei GTC01's and metal (aluminum) centering rings were used for correct hub fit. They snapped in place.

Not matter what anyone says you DON'T NEED THEM!!!! They do nothing to hold the wheel onto the car!!!


However I DO run them in all of my wheels because it makes it way easier to swap out wheels and tires and they are also dirt cheap. They do, do a job, it's just a non essential one. On cars with no studs and lug bolts it's a little more important to run hub rungs becuase there are no studs to hold the wheel on during tire changes and stripping lug bolts is more likely.

Right they put them there for our health?

Yep, Vitamins B12, C and Potassium are plentiful in hub rings.

Centering rings are an installation guide tool and really nothing else. The lug nuts properly seated to the wheels is what truly centers them and holds the wheel to the hub from the clamping action between the two surfaces (spindle hub and wheel hub interaction.) The rings can also melt/distort from track use (wheels get hot with track use! Touch one after coming in from a track session...) so I don't even use them on my track set. For my daily sets I leave them on if they have them... no issue if they don't or they become cracked/brittle with age; properly installing the wheel and securing the lug nuts in sequence by hand before tightening and torquing is what properly centers the wheel.
