Anyone else got a noisy ECU?

Hi all

My ECU is noisy. I'm talking about the main ECU under the dash up near the glove box.

I think it's either transistor switching or capacitor noise. It sounds like a light ticking noise which varies with speed and cuts in and out depending on load conditions (which reflects the switch-over between port and direction injection, so it adds up to be injector switching related).

It's pretty annoying, but before I look at getting the dealer to replace the ECU i'd like to find out if anyone else is suffering it.

And before anyone asks, yes I have a noisy high-pressure fuel pump, and no it's not that.

:thanks:

Were the wipers on? That's the only clicking in front of me that I've noticed.

I think there are some relays behind it that click when you set the heater controls, wipers, turn signals, headlights, ... These are usually located under the hood in most cars.

I have never heard physical sounds coming from normal solid state components or IC's. Relays however, do have a moving component which can give of a clicking sound when actuated.

Came here to say this. Capacitors and transistors have no moving parts, therefor, no noise (at least not in a low voltage DC applications ie. your ECU).

I'd look to see if there are any relays back there.

Might be a squirrel.

Are you sure it's not the HPFP? i know mine can be a kind of loud at partial throttle(50-60%), moderate load in the 3-4k rpm range.

Noise generator maybe???

I'm not 100% sure, no, and my HPFP is moderately noisy. The thing that makes me think it's the ECU is how it tips in/tips out depending on load and engine speed. E.g. on the over-run it goes very quiet where very small amounts of fuel are being injected, and then once it gets to 1200rpm or so it goes loud again, which is typically where the over-run fuel cut-off has now started to put fuel back in to stop the engine stalling.

I'll have to get a passenger to stick a stethoscope on it to confirm.
