DIY bushing replacement method

I've done some internet searches but I'm not finding a easy DIY method to press out control arm bushings with out a press.

How are folks tackling this from a shade tree perspective?

Take the control arms down to a shop that has a press and pay them to do the swap.

It depends on the bushings, but I normally use my bench vise.

Does autozone have a tool loan program for times like this? Never used it myself.

If you don't care about the existing bushings do the following:

1. Get a torch and burn the bushings until you can pull out the centre collar by pulling and twisting with a good pair of vice grips.

2. Get a hack saw and assemble it with the blade through the hole left in the rubber

3. Make two cuts through the rubber and the metal sleeve of the bushing. The cuts should be close together almost like you're cutting a pie or something.

4. Use a flat top screwdriver to pry out the section you cut, and then the remaining larger piece.

I recommend doing this in a well ventilated area as the rubber burning is quite stinky. Also be careful when cutting through the outer metal sleeve with the hack saw. You want to avoid cutting into the sleeve which holds the bushing.

I successfully used this method to remove all 26 bushings in my Integra when I put in the Energy Suspension kit.

While playing with fire is fun, It is a hassle and I got sick of it. A cheap 12-Ton press from Harbor-Freight made it a much quicker and cleaner process.

You're absolutely right, but sometimes you've got to work with what you've got.

use a press is the easiest, since no matter how you get it out, you will still need a press to get it in.

done all the bushing on my 240sx....the easiest and cheapest way is...fire...just burn them all off

I did them with my vice and some 5lb weights to sandwich the bushing. This was on my brother's e36/8, not my car.
