Let's Discuss Tire Wear

So i'm near as makes no difference to 7,000 miles, and I don't believe I drive particularly hard, though I do hoon about given the right circumstances. Anyways, I checked my tread depth this morning and I was a bit surprised by how much less depth the rear treads have. I would say they are about 1.5mm more shallow than the front.

I realize that the tries will be rotated as per the usual 7,500 mile standard check up, but I believe the tires are supposed to last about 45,000 miles. So two points here, one: how is your tread depth looking in relation to your miles and how have you driven? Two: should I expect a set if tires to last about 20,000 miles? I should post up some pictures of the current depths, perhaps I can do that in a bit. With my old Accord I went through tires quickly, but they would always be covered by warranty because it was not a performance car, with this car, I suspect, I will not be so lucky.

I just had my tires rotated at 7000 miles and there was equal wear front and back. ( I thought it a bit strange because I certainly let the back end move out going around corners etc). Just another data point.

You are super lucky. My rear tires are lucky if they last 5000 miles.

With a treadwear rating of 240, I would expect them to last upwards of 20-30K if they aren't abused and rotated frequently.

Also the rear camber is about -1.5 so expect your inner tire to wear quite a bit faster than the middle and outer tire.

The nice thing about having equal size tires front and rear with a higher rear wear rate is that you can always keep the tires with more tread on back without risking safety. In other words, say you blew a tire halfway thru the tread life. Well, you could simply buy 2 new ones and put them in the rear and eventually all 4 will end up with about even wear. Compared to a front wheel drive or front based all wheel drive with a higher front wear rate, where you would potentially have to deal with snap oversteer by keeping the worn tires in the rear, which is why they advise just replacing all 4 tires in a situation like that.

I rotated my tires around 5k, all are worn pretty bad by now. When I first got the car (after break in) there was a chunk of hooning, but not as much as would be expected by looking at my tires

Bumping this topic.

I checked the tread-depth on my tires and found the rears wearing much faster than the fronts. About 8/32" remaining on the rears, 10/32" on the fronts.

Sumitomo HTR-ZIII, 4k miles, 2 autocrosses, no track days.

I'll probably rotate them soon, but is it normal to see the rears wear that much quicker in only 4k miles?

Get your alignment checked.

But yes, it's pretty normal on a RWD car for the rears to wear quicker than the fronts. How much quicker is up to the alignment settings and how hard you drive it.

Yeah the odd part is I don't really drive this car that hard, other than autocrossing and hitting backroads a few times a month. Oh well, I guess I'll get an alignment if things don't improve after rotation.

toe is what wears tires camber alone doesnt affect wear very much

Yes, this. Little changes in toe in or out will massively affect tire wear.

My rear tires are down to the tread bars beacuse I drift around just about every corner... Is is it "safe" to put them in the front and burn up the 2 that were up front? Or should I just replace the rear 2 with new tires? I guess that might be better, then I'm only buying 2 tires at a time and not 4... Idk.... Opinions??
