Green engine coolant used quickly?

haven't found my answer and the tech's think i may have a leak.. or they think the car just uses a lot of coolant.

possibilities: i didn't have a snorkel for the past 9000 miles and maybe the hot air caused my engine coolant to be used up?

well anyways.. they filled up the green coolant all the way to full and again it's at a 1/4 now. not due to burping or air in the tank.

anyone else having these issues? i put back the snorkel just in case

(had the snorkel off due to intake... but reverted to stock because I bogged like a MF )

When you checked the engine coolant was the vehicle on idle or was it off?

Mine's been losing coolant too, but not at the same rate as yours.

I think the techs should have pressure tested the cooling system. You can rent a pressure tester from many auto stores if you want to try and test the system yourself. The test doesn't take very long and should help find a leak. By simply filling up the reservoir they are treating the symptoms, not the disease. You may also want to get in writing that they used the ''green'' coolant.

FYI: Cars don't normally ''use'' coolant, hence the extremely long service interval.

Anyone tested the oil for coolant contamination?

no tests for oil contamination but coolant is another story.. getting an oil change tomorrow don't know if that will affect anything but it's worth a shot

checked it both times and both were low. Idle seemed lower than off

czar07 02-05-2013 07:20 AM

Robmilkshakes 02-05-2013 07:08 PM

Yeah different additives, it's close, but not compatible.

@Tylub - How have your coolant levels been lately?

since my 22.5k mile service, they put back in green coolant and it's been pretty consistent. No major changes and my coolant "leak" stopped as well. They might have done something, maybe not, who knows..

the coolant just evaporates quickly, i think ive filled mine twice and im at 30k miles. but this was only when it was hot, during the winter i never topped it off once and it stayed full the entire time
