Call me stupid but what are those sleeves for?
Extending the chambers/oil flow/oil lubrication/etc.?

allows you to run bigger pistons/more boost etc and they also have a "closed deck" skirt at the top now to help prevent bore-shift.

Mainly for the really serious engine builds.

Correct me if im wrong but our engines are unsleeved, so we would just need to bore and install these sleeves for stock pistons to fit?

ft_sjo 01-31-2013 05:14 AM

Why would you go to all that trouble just to re-fit the OEM pistons?

JP 01-31-2013 05:15 AM

stock bores have a metal matrix liner cast into them. Bore that out, press these in, deck the sleeves to match the block, bore and finish the sleeves to fit for your choice of pistons.

From the "FA20 Engine Mechanical - Engine Unit - Details (2013 FR-S)" doc from toyota:

Quote:

(4) A compact block has been achieved by producing the thin cast-iron liners and cylinder block
sub-assembly as a unit. It is not possible to rebore a block which uses this type of liner.
(5) The liners are a undercut-type, which have been manufactured so that their casting exterior
forms a large irregular surface in order to enhance the adhesion between the liners and the
aluminum cylinder block sub-assembly. The enhanced adhesion helps improve heat dissipation,
resulting in a lower overall temperature and reduced heat deformation of the cylinder bores.

Mmmmm so it slides Into the combustion chamber?
bigger pistons ... ? How so, the diameter is set constant only xy horizontal expansion is possible so it lengthens the chamber with this mod to the block .. does this really work? hahaha

well i mean same size as stock.

this is mainly for people who are rebuilding the engine, with all high performance internal parts. stroker kits is what these sleeve for, since original block wont have enough strength once you increase the engine displacement. and could handle high boost power too.

turbo_jimbo 01-31-2013 01:49 PM

That didnt take long.

Really?

It addresses the issues of having an open deck block, not ideal for boost and big power.

Thank you, this was what I needed to wrap my head around these sleeves hahaha
So they slip into the cooling part of the block to add rigidity and keep its form under high rpm/pressures
