Anyone else get shocked from static??

If I wear a sweater... when I get out of the car I get shocked when I close the door! The seats generate static electricity... just wanted to know If this happens to anyone else.

Also, the sky is blue, clouds are white, and it gets colder in the winter. I've had static with every car I have owned.

Edit: I should say, with cloth seats. I've never owned a car with leather seats.

You can push on the window instead of the door to close it without getting shocked.

I've been shocked twice today by my car getting out of it -_-.

Some cars are static-prone, just like your sweater is more prone than a polo. The process of egress usually has you rubbing across materials that create static. You'll notice cars with more leather generate less static, for example.

Thats exactly it. As you guys may know, the rubbing of one fabric (your sweater/shirt) against another (car seat fabric) creates an electrical potential, which is discharged when you touch something metal (the car door) hence the static shock.

While touching the glass does prevent the shock, you may still discharge on the next metal surface you touch. Its been my experience that if you touch metal as you are exiting the car (putting your hand on something metal before you get out of the seat), you usually won't get shocked because you have grounded yourself beforehand.

SCIENCE! :confused0068:

Another tip: after getting out of the car, before closing the door, touch the body with your nuckles, it'll discharge you without the shocking feeling.

I think they mean the electrical kind, not what you do in the privacy of your own home. :bonk:

Its horrible when you work valet and get shocked whenever you close a door or even hand keys to someone.

Many times

Even if I open the door, reach down and touch the ground, I STILL have enough static electricity built up to throw a visible arc between my fingers and the window. I wonder if if has something to do with the tint material? Strange...

MarcusM117 01-23-2013 08:34 PM

I did it twice in a row with a visible arc as I was complaining about being shocked. My fault for wearing wool!
