diy request: install a driving camera by tapping power from the interior map light.
 

hi all,

I've recently purchased a front facing driving camera that i'm planning to mount right behind my rear view mirror to continuously record my day to day driving and for security purposes or evidence should it be required. Anyway, the device comes with a Power Safety Device which needs to be tapped onto the car battery power as well as to be grounded, and it prevents the camera from sapping all of the battery power since it is continuously recording.

I have an option to run the power cable all around the windscreen to the fuse box and work from there, but I was thinking if it is possible to just tap the power from the interior map light. Has anyone done anything like that? I would like to know if this is possible, and if so how?

I managed to install it by tapping it from the stop light fuse via the internal fuse box.

I'm just playing it safe by installing one facing the front. It's been recording quite nicely both during the day and night. This one has a built in GPS and g sensor to save key moments if it detects too much g load (impacts). You should get one

Any reason not to run the wire through the dome enclosure to the windshield instead of pinching the wire with the dome light box?

There really isn't a lot of force pinching the cable at all. I was just easier this way...only reason why i did it =)
