Another DIY PlastiDip Wheels
Myself and my buddy Sam(PRORICAN) got a little bored today and decided to PlastiDip our wheels to offer a little protection for the upcoming winter and well cuz it looks good too. I'm sure there are several of these out there but another one doesn't hurt.
1. Remove: First off, jack your car up safely and remove the wheels. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y25...021_142957.jpg 2. Clean: We used a mild detergent with water to basically wash the wheels. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y25...021_143740.jpg 3. Dry: Thoroughly dry your wheels http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y25...021_143751.jpg 4. Clean... AGAIN: We decided to use Isopropyl Alchohol instead of Denatured Alcohol for further cleaning purposes. I feel that Denatured leaves a small hazy sheen behind and we didn't want that. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y25...021_144317.jpg 5. PREP YOUR WHEEL: This should be a fairly easy but lengthy process. The better you prep the better your work will be. We used painters tape and old newspaper. Index cards would work as well. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y25...021_145541.jpg 6. Apply PlastiDip: This isn't difficult if done correctly. Apply in a wind/dust free environment. You want to avoid over-spraying that will cause drips. Nice and medium paced passes over the wheel. Once on each side of the wheel then down each spoke on both sides. Keep the coats light! I did a total of 4 coats, about 15-20 mins between coats and it came out great. As seen on here: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMITPU-tM60"]www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMITPU-tM60[/ame] 7. Dry: Don't rush your work now. Let the wheels sit for about an hour to let it dry. The can says 4 hours till dry but one should be enough to at least put on the car. Peel off all prep work, slowly! 8. Install: Carefully install your wheels. They should be dry to the touch and not tacky at this point. we did this minus all the masking on the wheels and got the same results
the paint just peels offthe tires so i suggest skipping this step |
Looks nice, curious how many cans of PlastiDip did it take?

Plastidip is amazingly durable. I didnt know what to expect when I opened this thread, but the wheels look pretty damn good that way!

Looks great! I did my center caps only since I have Toyota badges and didn't want to spring for Toyota caps... but may do the wheels now.
