Stock shift knob problems?

So shortly after I got the car I noticed that the shift knob would rotate while I was shifting. So I rotated it the other way and tightened it, the problem is when you do that the shaft pushes the shift pattern plate up. Has anyone else had this problem? I would really like to find a solution without changing out the stock knob, I like it :)

I have your solution, take it to the dealer, and they'll get you a new OEM one that works :D

I have the same problem. Kind of annoying that the plate is loose.
And I'd hate to take it into a dealer for something dumb like that. Can't help my feelings, but I will avoid any dealer if I can.

It will rotate over time, my stock did that and now my flossy one has rotated about 5 degrees , which I kinda like coz the numbers are now facing me

Lol, I though I was the only one ^^
I forgot to mention it when I was at the dealer for the 1000KM check.

You could always try some thread tape or locktite to tighten the fitment and reduce the number of turns needed to keep it on? Just a thought...

How about every so often just take your hand and straighten it out?:)

that's why you get a shift knob with no numbers...i mean really, do you really need numbers to know what gear you are in?

What does that have to do with the knob coming loose? If you try to tighten it, it causes the top of the knob to push up and off. It is disconcerting having the knob turn in your hand when you are trying to find a gear.

I have a BRZ knob in my MR-S and it did the same thing. It is because the knob is not made with a proper stop at the top of the threads. They (Toyota and Subaru) are relying on the cap to stop the shift shaft but it is not stout enough. I solved the proplem by making a stop out of the threads from a m12 x 1.25 bolt and screwing it all the way in then putting the knob on and screwing it on. I had to take it off a couple times and adjust the insert so the shift pattern looked right but it does work. If I had a new FR-S or BRZ I would go to the dealer and get a new knob.

No but if anyone else ever drives the car, its nice.

Funny story, the ONE TIME I valeted my old turbo miata I had a different MAZDA OEM knob on there with the wrong pattern and the poor valet was going nuts on my transmission and clutch/throttle trying to find reverse. I had to walk back to the valet lot and show him where reverse was. Youd think it be easy to guess since the car only rolls backwards in reverse, and there are really only 4 spots where reverse could be.

Yes, I've only ever owned manual cars and none of those knobs ever rotated on me mid-shift. I was just wondering if anyone else had the same problem and how they fixed it..... not really crying. But whatever you say.

Mine was one full turn loose when I got it. Tightened it 360 degrees and it's been fine ever since. Loc-tite could also work.
