MT shift pattern
 

So with the lack of low end torque, coupled with high elevation, >5,000 ft, I find that I need to be in 2nd to really enjoy most turns. Shifting from 3rd to 2nd smoothly is slow and more difficult than 4 to 3, which I almost never need to be quick, (the stock gas pedal doesn't help, a wider one is on order) and since I never go into 1 while moving (and don't drag race)... why not have 2 and 3 across from each other? Is there a way to modify the shift pattern with some sort of different linkage? Or is it inherent to the whole layout of the transmission and therefore a completely stupid question?

I forgot what car they mentioned this in Top Gear but its a great idea that needs to be brought to the attention of car manufacturers!

As for putting one in the FR-S, I don't know enough about transmissions to say for sure, but I suspect it wouldn't be easy.

there more than likely is now way to change it. what you want is a dogleg tranny but they were never really popular and since its a 6 speed the use of second and third should be about equal on most roadcourses and even at an autox.

my advice would be to buy new tires so you can then take corners in third at higher rpm

Wow there's a name for it! That's what I want.

But that means I'm going around the corner faster... not necessarily something I want to do if I'm just looking for that feeling of having to modulate the throttle at a reasonable speed.

Practice some more. Rev matching your downshift will help slot the shifter into 2nd easily.

Agreed. I heel-toe into 2nd on a constant basis around town, so shifting into 2nd has become second nature to me. It's really just a matter of practice and repetition, and with a transmission as good as this one, it's fun to do.

On a related note, it makes such a large difference shifting into 2nd when the transmission is cold vs. hot.

Doglegs are interesting to say the least, but I don't think there is an easy way to change the layout of your gearbox. Considering the fact that most doglegs were 5speed with Reverse being in the number one spot, I'm not sure if you will find many resources for modifying a six speed Trans to achieve the same goals.


And like others have said, A good rev match and some good Trans fluid is really all you need to get great downshifts on any gearbox.

Someone else always has it worse.
