BRZ & USB Port

So not sure if anyone has ran into this.

I have a 16gb usb still that I use for music. I'm only using about 1/2 or less of it. 7.28 GB free. 74 Items/Folders.

1) It seems the unit only picks up some of my folders? All music was copied from iTunes.

2) I added some new songs this afternoon and the radio would not even read the usb, the button was gray. I deleted some songs and it would pick up the usb stick again however maybe still only 40% of all the folders.

So does anyone know if its a format issue? Max number of folders?

:thanks:

Are they all MP3? If you bought some of the songs through iTunes your going to need to remove the drm first.

Is formatted in FAT32? Maybe the problem is related to the 4GB file transfer cap? Although that's shouldn't technically affect it...

Have you tried formatting in exFAT? If it reads then perhaps that will solve it because exFAT doesn't have the 4GB cap...

Not sure I follow:(. Using a macpro for Itunes. The USB is PNY I bought from Best Buy and just plugged in and transferred files, made folders and off I went.

Well, you can try reformatting your drive, but you would have to resync all your tunes. If you wanna do that, then here's how:

Go to Disc Utility on your Mac.
On the left pane, click on your USB drive.
Go to the Erase tab.
Click the drop down box and select exFAT
Name your Drive
Hit erase.

Load up iTunes and resync all your music.

See if it works better! If it doesn't then, I have no idea what the problem is..

I think he's talking about how files can't be bigger than 4gb which wouldn't effect you since mp3 are small.

I would check the encode settings, I'm pretty sure by default iTunes encodes as AAC not mp3.

If that doesn't work I would wipe the drive and start over like Guff said.

Sounds like you're doing everything correctly. It's possible that your USB stick is just old and the head unit has issues reading it... Maybe pick up a newer USB stick and give it a shot.

"DRM" means Digital Rights Management" and it means the mp3 files are encoded with special data that restricts what type of devices can read the files and how they can be used, (i.e. they are "protected"). If you've done the encoding from CD, you should have control over this feature. If you're seeing discrepancies with which files are being displayed, sometimes XYZ files are visible, other times ABC files, it sounds like a software or hardware incompatibility.

Its a new stick, like 1 month old :) I'll try reformatting it. For some reason I remember seeing somewhere that the head unit would only read up to a 16gb stick not anything larger. So my only thought is maybe that size limit is smaller? Strange thought b/c when you connect an ipod that size limit doesn't seem to apply but maybe its the way its managed.

As far as the itunes sync. Its not sync'd. B/C its a usb stick you manually create folders and drag and drop. Is there a way to sync external drives? I though you could only sync apple devices?

I knew what DRM is. My understanding was that if you u/l from a cd, no drm. But if you d/l from itune DRM unless you purchase the 1.29 or what ever song. The work around being, d/l a drm, burn to a cd, then u/l back to itunes?

Right, and that's what I was thinking, but I guess there's no harm in trying a reformatting...

Your USB stick size is too large. 8 GB max.

You can also hit a 'number of files/folders' limitation. Many HUs have that issue.

According to an internal Subaru Tech Support Guide for the FT nav:

Quote:

USB memory

Max data size: 8GB
Class: USB mass storage class

Max picture resolution size: 720*576 pixel
Max layers of directory: 8 layers [levels of nested sub-folders]
Max number of folders (overall): 3000
Max number of files (overall): 9999

Video formats: DivX, WMV, MP4
Audio formats: MP3, WMA

Supported file formats: FAT32
Supported audio formats: MP3/WMA/WAV
Maximum current: 1.0 A
Supported capacities: 16 MB to 8 GB
Compatibility: USB1.0/1.1/2.0 (maximum transfer speed is same as USB 2.0)
Mass memory support: Supports USB mass storage class
Does not support USB hubs or multi card readers

Max resolution for video playback: 720x480 (30 fps), 720x576 (25 fps)
Those specs (and more) are also listed in your navigation owners manual, starting on page 244. You can download PDFs here:
subaru.com/owners/resource-center/owners-manuals/index.html
Tip: Having the PDF version is handy for searching for a keyword (such as "USB" or "folders"). ;)

OP- Is 74 the total number of folders+files on your USB stick?

:thanks: I knew I saw that somewhere :bonk:

So got a new 8gb stick loaded up my folders and still nothing. So I started trying one folder at a time.

Turns out most of my old skool music is mpeg-4....which the unit does not see. So I'm searching for an easy way to convert them right now.
