advice needs re 0W-20 oil brand
 

HI all,
Ow-20 oil is a little difficult to come by in Australia - 2 options I can get are:

Mobil 1 Engine Oil 0W20 Advanced fuel economy or
0W20 SAE Royal Purple Motor Oil

I need it for my first oil change and I don't know anything about the royal purple oil so wold value peoples opinion

Amsoil is good stuff. I would not buy either Mobil 1 or Royal Purple. See if you can get Redline ester based synthetic if you can't get Amsoil or Motul.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy Royal Purple or Mobil 1. I've used both and never had any concerns. And I was using the Royal Purple in a very rough race environment. Redline as mentioned is also good as is Motul.

The big thing to watch for with synthetics is to avoid mixing them. Any time I switched from one synthetic to another, I always ran a regular dino oil in between. Different synthetics have different additives and may not always work well together. There is no issue with mixing a synthetic with a dino oil in case the situation ever arises.

I just want to clarify for the sake of other people, those first two links are NOT independent tests, they are run by Amsoil themselves.

At least until the warranty runs out I'd use the one that complies with manufacturer requirements. Is RP now properly certified?

I don't know why so many people poo poo Mobil 1. If top class racing teams can use it (some even straight from the retail bottles), and top quality car manufacturers factory fill and recommend it, then I don't see how it could be so bad. I remember when Mitsubishi Ralliart switched to Mobil 1 for their WRC car and were shocked at how much power they gained. They said it would have cost them several thousands of dollars just to try and gain that much performance elsewhere. It has been proven in just about every way you can prove a product - millions of miles in the harshest conditions. Even when I took apart my own engine after 100k of hard use with Mobil 1, the mechanics said it was the cleanest looking engine they had seen. And I've tried other oils, including the new Pennzoil Ultra, but none of them feel as smooth or give me as much power. And it's available everywhere for a good price. Plus, they have friendly and knowledgeable customer service.

So yeah, you can swear by Amsoil or Royal Purple or Redline all you want but I've never seen any top racing teams use it. And sure, the big oil companies pay but if they really could get a noticeable improvement over the competition, then surely you would still see some bigger racing teams go for it. And I'm certainly not going to special order it and pay extra every time I need to change the oil...

The only negative i've heard about Mobil 1 are the reports of high oil consumption in subaru boxer engines. That might not apply to ours?

Actually, I know race teams that have used all three. Not saying they're better or worse then Mobile 1, but they have a race background also.

If the oils have an API or ILSAC rating then they are fine to mix/run back to back. You'll need to be running an oil with either of these ratings if your car is under warranty anyway.

You realise most oil companies down under do 0w-20 but only supply it in bulk to the trade.

I ran Mobil1 on my WRX for over 8 years without any consumption issues. It was modified and putting down 292whp/255wtq the entire time.

So for all you guys running mobil 1, are you using 0w20 or 0w30?

Just use 0W-20 like the manual says. The only thing 0W-30 will give you is less power and lower fuel economy. Unless you are planning to race or track it on a very hot day and want to give it a little extra protection.
