P0341 code in my FA24 swap

Here's a snapshot of my intake cam's signals.

Number one looks erratic. Any idea why?

I’d check the connections to the cam position sensor. Doesn’t RS use an adaptor?

RS uses a 2013-16 wiring harness and 2013 sensors. I couldn't see the coolant temp sensor but I'm guessing he either rethreaded a 2013-16 into the block or made a plug adaptor. Oil temp and pressure sensors are the old ones.

Tomorrow, I'm going to try a 0.0025 shim under the sensor. I was reading that if the air gap is to small there could be signal noise. Way back there was a recall where the dealers added a shim.

This article is for VR crank sensors but it should apply to cam sensors as well...I hope.

Things tried:

Switched intake sensors.

New sensor.

Replaced plug and rechecked continuity.

Ran engine with alternator unplugged.

Made 0.025 shim. Engine didn't want to start and then ran rough.

And, I've got this annoying accessory belt squeak. New Conti belt. Belt alignment looks a bit off. I used my 2013 alt bracket. I think I need a 22+.

Take another log of the signals with the 025 shim installed. Get some thin shim stock so you can stack layers to try to find the sweet spot. Having prior experience developing similar systems, I was disappointed to see how the early encoders were designed. Rookie mistake.

edit... I see now that you're logging the angle. That's a calculated value. I've also noticed a bit of what could be interpreted as either mechanical hysteresis or just too much derivative gain in the control loop of one of my servos. I don't think anyone has actually messed with the gains in the firmware so I've just ignored it and hope it doesn't end up in premature failure of that one phasor.

I'll try a thinner shim. The tsb bulletin (as I read it) indicates 1.26-1.35 mm. Without the shim, mine appeared closer, almost touching the trigger plate. With my shim, I was at about 1 mm.

Is there other data that I could log to give me a better idea what's going on? I stumbled on the cam angle because it showed the "aberration". Ecutek is not nube friendly.

That doc is a good read. Follow it over my intuition. None of this is noob-friendly. If I was in your shoes, I would finally break down and buy an oscilloscope. That's the perfect tool here. Check out the Subaru TSB for this same issue. They do it the "proper" way.

Will be a fun experiment. No idea how long it will take to, or even if it will ship. :D

I accidentally ordered an extra one. They're coming from a Chinese outfit in Australia so who knows when I'll see them. My hope is to come up with a step-by-step tutorial for anyone interested. If it works, can't beat it for fifty bucks all in.

eagerly following this thread in case I ever fa24 swap. Thanks for being a pioneer

Thanks. I'm sure this P0341 problem is very atypical, but I've got a knack for atypical problems. Everything else has been really straight forward.

Later this weekend (just for giggles) I'm going to swap out the actuator. I may source another ecu just to rule it out.

blsfrs 09-01-2024 11:09 PM

I swapped the actuator, no change. Anybody got a spare ecu they want to sell?

Meanwhile, over in Vantucky...

Look familiar? I forgot to order o-scope probes - DUH - so I could only monitor one channel with a ghetto setup. The real probes should arrive tomorrow.
