Airaid Intake Install with Snorkel Delete DIY
 

So my Airaid intake came in today and of course I had to throw it on ASAP. I am pleased to say everything was packaged very well with the hardware separated individually in the bag. The instructions were spot on but I have included a few things below I think would help with the install. I also have highlighted removing the snorkel behind the front fender without actually removing the entire fender.


Stock Removal

First up was removing the stock intake. In the picture below remove the 3 bolts circled in green. They require a 10mm socket and the top right one is hidden down behind the air filer box. Next loosen the 3 clamps circled in blue and remove each section/tube. The whole stock assembly should easily lift out now.

Snorkel Removal

Next up is removing the snorkel without taking off the front fender. You are at your own risk with this, I am not responsible if you screw up. This requires some patience and smaller hands wouldn't hurt. Start by removing the 5 bolts circled in yellow below and the two pop clips circled in blue. The metal strip with rubber seal will lift off, sit this to the side.

Now you will need to gently pull the fender up and reach in with a 10mm boxed in wrench. There are only 2 bolts you need to remove and you can see them right under the fender. I broke them loose with the wrench then finished removing them by hand. Not too bad but take your time and don't damage the fender.

After the two bolts are removed it is not time to pull the snorkel out. You will need to wiggle it around and orient it in such a way to pull it out between the fender and frame. I found the fender will pull out from around the headlight housing slightly and allow more space to pull the snorkel on thru, see below.

Now put the metal stip back on with the 5 bolts and 2 pop clips. Done.


Airaid

Airaid time! Really the instructions are great so follow them, they are not Chinese garbage like most things nowadays. You need to assemble the air box and use a couple new supplied modified mounts. After that it is pretty much just the opposite of removing the stock unit. Here are some pictures and tips that should help you out.

1. I cleaned ever thing with a quick wipe down to ensure nothing got into the intake during manufacturing, packaging, etc. I only found cardboard dust from being in the box but it is still good to double check.
2. Routing the MAF wire. David from Airaid posted something up about this and it is good to double check as it might come to close to the belts with the new routing. See link: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...5&postcount=35
   The clip is wrapped in tape so I gently cut around it to allow removal. I then used some electrical tape to re-wrap the cut out spot.

3. Finally the instructions hit on removing the sound generator. I also took this out. They include a nice plastic plug for the firewall. Pull the tube out and the rubber grommet, then just push the supplied plug in. Done.

Here is it is all installed, cleans up the engine bay great! Total time was just a hair over an hour while taking pictures. If you can use basic hand tools this is a piece of cake.

Tools used: a 10mm socket wrench with extension, small and large flat head screwdrivers, and a couple allen wrenches for the new Airaid hardware.

You will lose power doing this, as it leaves a sharp edge for the air to fight when entering the stock airbox. That's why our cold air box has a velocity stack at the inlet to smooth the airflow entering the box. I proved this on the flowbench and the dyno in development.

What's the purpose of the snorkel?

It's what pipes the intake noise into the cabin.

Wrong tube. That comes off the intake, the snorkel draws air in to the intake

Yeah looks like alot of extra work only to lose power ??

Taking the snorkel off the stock intake will lose power yes but it has been noted by several people and several manufacturers that the removal of this snorkel (the tube in the bumper) for an aftermarket inatake will net slight power gains and has even been said to sound better :thumbup:

worked like a charm. The snorkel closest to the driver side headlight finally popped loose when i pushed it towards the other headlight and twisted it counter clockwise.

Took an extra 15m to take out along with the sound generator. took a bit longer till I remembered to pull out the grommet from the firewall.

Wow I can't believe how much of a fight that snorkel put up. Thanks to my opposing thumbs and a pair of plastic cutters, I won the battle.


It was too risky to me to just try to pull it out. I could see where it was getting caught up and it wasn't pretty. Needless to say I won't be going back to a stock intake....
