Oil extractor oil change.
 

Thought I would let everyone know that I just changed my oil using a dipstick oil extractor. I also changed out the oil filter. I put in 5 and 5/8 quarts to be just shy of the fill line on the dipstick. Based on what others have been reporting, I don't think the method could have left much if anything behind. I used the West Marine 6.9 quart extractor. Worked great!

Those extractors are very useful. I use them on my boat and offroad vehicles. For my cars though, I almost find the fumoto valve to be an easier solution.

But with the extractor method there is no need to worry about a car falling on top of you. Only if I had a pit in my garage would I not use this method given how fast and easy it was.

I have one as well. Been using UT on my bimmers (until they got rid of dipstick!). Love the fact that fr-s/brz oil filter is also on top. No more kidding the car for me.

i may have to look into one of these. i live in an apartment and this would be great. i could change it in my garage here and no one would even know!

Make sure you got that tube all the way down...want to make sure you get all that nasty stuff at the bottom of the barrel :)

Do you take the extractor with the oil in it to say Autozone or some place that takes used oil or do you empty it out in another container first?

I emptied it into containers for curbside recycling. You just need to be careful not to tip the container upside down or it can damage its ability to hold a vacuum.

They recycle waste oil curbside for you?? Damn!

I did the first oil change on my car last night. I tried to siphon the oil using an oil extractor and it didn't work!

The extractor is how I normally perform oil changes, however, the extractor tube wouldn't go far down enough to siphon all the oil from the FA20. I got about 1.5 litres before it stopped sucking oil. I wrestled with the tube for a while to see if I could get it down lower into the pan but no luck. I had to lift the car and resort to draining the oil from the pan instead.

What's going on? I was using the smallest extractor tube I had too. I'm positive it wouldn't go any further. Somebody, help me out.

I don’t recommend this for the first oil change.
I don’t think you will get all the junk out of the sump (metal, casting junk…). Witch all how do the first oil change early do it to get rid of all that junk out.
If you ask me I believe the first 2 to 3 oil changes should be throe the sump drain plug. And before tightening the pug I would pour ½ to 1 quart of oil to be sour that all the old oil and junk is out. Plus I would use a filter magnet to.

what extractor did you use? .. i have been looking for one that works with our vehicles

I've used a MityVac Oil Extractor for more then 30 years and have never had an internal engine problem.

1984 Mercedes 300D 346,000 miles

1997 Jeep Wrangler 147,000 miles

1992 Toyota Mini Van 219,000 miles

2003 Mercedes C230 Kompressor 113,00 Miles (Doesn't even have an oil drain plug on engine.)

And now a 2013 FR-S 2,750 miles

I think far more important to engine longevity is frequency of oil changes. I use only manufacturers filters and Mobil 1 on everything but the diesel.

I change religiously ever 5,000 miles.

Perhaps it's just luck but the extractor and this regiment works for me and a lot easier then getting under some of these vehicles.
