Engine Rebuild - Lifter/Rocker Reinstallation

Overly ambitious noob here attempting to rebuild my motor after spinning a bearing...

In preparation to get the heads resurfaced and washed, the machine shop told me I needed to remove the cams, lifters, and rockers before drop-off. Unfortunately, I didn't take note of which lifters/rockers were paired or their original position on the heads. :bonk:

Can the lifters/rockers be reinstalled in any order as long as the valve clearances are within spec?

Yes.

In theory, you keep the same lifters with the same rockers since they wear together. Not really a big deal though.

As I understand it, the valve clearance is determined by the cap on top of the valve and the FA20 doesn't have much room for error. When I needed engine work done, I paid a professional. My wallet is lighter but my sanity is (mostly) intact.

Valve lash is adjusted through with the shim , but any change in the valve train between the head and cam can cause the lash to be different.

Thank you for finishing my thought.

I appreciate the input.

I suppose wear is relevant a factor. The parts have a little over 80k miles, which I think is fairly evident on the lifters:

Is that an excessive amount of wear in your opinion?

I've gotten mixed responses about this on- and off-line. I'm leaning towards replacing all lifters/rockers just to be safe.

It's really difficult to tell with a picture. As long as there is no obvious damage I wouldn't be afraid to run it. I would check check the rollers and make sure they feel okay, no rough spots when turned or excessive play.

Wear on some components does not seem to be an issue. When my engine was professionally rebuilt with 90k miles, many parts were reused. Rocker arms, pivots, cams, timing chains, etc.
