Gen 2 LV Transmission Fluid

I plan to do an early transmission fluid change in my 2022 BRZ and noticed that the manual recommends OEM Manual Transmission Gear Oil LV 75W oil or other GL-4 75W oil (as opposed to 75W90 for gen 1).

From digging through old threads, a lot of people had good experiences with slightly thinner oil like Pentosin MTF2 and Redline MTL (or even MT-90) in colder climates, which made me want to give it a try. Based on the 2nd gen manual's recommendation for a low viscosity oil, should I be sticking to something like Redline MT-LV over MTL? Does this mean the factory fill is most likely thinner than MTL? I can't really find much about MT-LV here and was hoping someone might have more experience with it and can compare it to MTL.

I would just stick with same grading oil

The MT-LV is what you will want.

Straight 75w is a lot thinner than what was in the old car. Stick with that if its not a track car, It will do what you want.

I was one of the people who put $80 worth of Pentosin MTF2 in my trans at 40k. I wish I could do it again, but they dont make it anymore. Im probably going with the Counter Space garage (CSG) 50/50 mix they have on their site, or Redline MTL when I hit 80k. Not long from now.

Checking CSG site and don't see any 50/50 mix combos. I recall back a decade or so the subaru crowd figured out some mix of Motul and something else I forget. But that was not the 86 platform.

I've read good comments on some Ford manual gear oil, but would have to dig the numbers back up. I looked for that Pentosin before I realized it's now obsolete. Darn, sounds like it works well with 1st gen transmissions.

If you know the mix, please share. I'm running Motul300 and it's been worse for me than OEM in my opinion. Makes the car more notchy, but I've also added perrin shift bushing, whiteline trans insert, stage 2 clutch and other stuff. But the change to Motul doesn't seem to help until it gets good and warm. PNW near Portland for reference.

Just noticed this in Redline's Website. Anybody tried it?

I was running a mix of MT90 / Pennzoil Synchromesh with good results. However, my mechanic blew a head gasket and filled transmission completely with Pennzoil Synchromesh when he replaced clutch. Transmission is a noisy mess right now, so I was considering a full fill of MT-LV.

I have not put in it my gen 2 yet, but will try it. I did put it in my '20 and found it a little better than the stock fluid for street driving.

Pentosin mtf2 has been superseded by ffl4 fwiw.

FFL4 returned a DCT fluid, but I did find TITAN SINTOFLUID FE SAE 75W.

DCT fluids are gl4 and additised for synchronized transmissions. They intended the ffl4 for both types. DCT specific fluids are simply closer to atf in viscosity, like all the other fluids referenced in this thread. Another great option would be Ravenol mtf2 if one wants similar viscosity to the esteemed Pentosin.

Interesting information about the DCT and ATF fluids. The FFL4 looks like it's spec'd for GL5.

Some TDS sheets for some of the lower viscosity oils discussed.

Considering that all of the synchros except for one are the exact same part number as gen 1, it's safe to say that the extremely thin oil is for a tiny economy improvement at the expense of wear protection and that there are no mechanical changes to make it only suit thinner oil.

I'll be switching to Redline MT-85 75w-85 after the first 15,000km. I don't trust the watery stock fluid for any longer than that.

Have they not revised tolerances elsewhere? Thinner may be more appropriate if so.
