In search of cooling options for an auto trans
Hello, my currents mods are as follows
• HKS High power catback • JDL Custom over/mid pipe • Ft86speed uneven length exhaust manifold • Injen short ram intake • Tein Flex A Coilovers with hydraulic bump stop • StopTech Slotted rotors • StopTech braided brake lines • O.Z Ultraleggera 18x8.5 (18lbs/each) • Bridgestone Potenza RE-71s • OpenFlash tablet tune stage3(e85) • Valenti Jewel tail lights • Seibon Euro style duck tail spoiler • Seibon FA Style carbon fiber hood I am looking to upgrade the cooling systems of my car in preparation for supercharging. My car has an auto trans, so im not sure what my options are, while browsing online i havent not seen any labels to indicate whether they are made for MT or AT. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, hope everyone is having a productive off season |
So you're looking for like a radiator? Or a transmission cooler?
If you need a transmission cooler I think you have to go with a pump driven unit like how drifters cool their diffs. Might have to add ports to the transmission case to add lines to the cooler. With an external electric pump. As far as radiator, there are several options for upgraded stock fitment that don't matter what trans you have. If those don't look big enough, I've got a double pass radiator coming to the market soon. That will be the largest core on the market Sent from my ONEPLUS A5010 using Tapatalk |

Thank you for the quick response, I was initially planning on both radiator and oil cooler, however if there is that much work involved in the oil cooler with the AT, ill likely just do the radiator for now, and see how the temps are after installing the supercharger |

I will do oil cooler, and the koyorad is confirmed by manufacturer to work with AT. My only remaining question now, is the ATF cooler in the radiator on our cars? https://parts.subaru.com/a/Subaru_20...10-154-01.html this diagram has me wondering... thanks again. |

A transmission ATF cooler is incredibly easy to install. No additional work to install than an oil cooler.
Most Auto trans owners who track the car and/or go boost install one. |
Keep in mind that the stock setup is also designed to ‘Warm up’ the transmission to keep it in that Goldilocks temperature range. I had installed a supplementary cooler on a car that at times I had to use the supplied cover to keep from losing too much heat. I had the same issue with engine oil coolers that had to be covered in the winter. Temperature gauges are a wonderful thing to have.

The stock setup utilizes a coolant to ATF heat exchanger, no reason to bypass this, keep it in the loop, install a thermostatic fluid control valve after the HE before your ATF cooler to bypass the ATF cooler during warm up but always utilize the heat exchanger.
Should have a thermostatic fluid control valve for the oil cooler as well. |
