New member introduction & TPMS self-service findings
Hi guys! Lewes here.
I'm located in MA, and I was so lucky that I got my '22 BRZ Limited a month ago in MSRP from a local Subaru dealer. I have actually been browsing around as a guest for a few months now. I finally registered an account and I have something would like to share with everyone. But first, here is the beauty https://i.ibb.co/5FGWfDH/IMG-9471.jpg https://i.ibb.co/N7RLz2c/IMG-9856.jpg As you can see, I put a new set of wheels and tires on it. It's 18x8 Sparco Podio & 225/40ZR18 Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 Plus. I ordered the tire&wheel package on Tire Rack, it came in with their T6 TPMS sensor. I'm so in love with these fainted bronze-ish color pair with the metallic grey. https://i.ibb.co/3hd8zfK/IMG-9849.jpg ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now here is the thing, since I got new tire&wheels, so it came the 2nd set TPMS issue. I've been browsing around for a solution, and I've found that Panda Grahams was able to register with Autel TS501 in this thread: https://www.ft86club.com/forums/show...1&postcount=17. So, I bought the same model on Amazon, trying to do that myself. A few days later I got the TPMS tool, update the software to the latest. Well, unfortunately, the latest version of TS501 firmware still does not support '22 BRZ/GR86. I tried using the gen1 option but with no luck. Not responding https://i.ibb.co/KyYggDC/IMG-9851.jpg I was thinking that maybe the unit I got is broken. So I decided to take a test on my roommate's '14 Toyota Camry before I return it. Then, I found that there are 2 options for '14 Camry. https://i.ibb.co/h7Xqz9n/IMG-9853.jpg I tried both 2 & 3, only option 2 works. But both of them are 315MHz. So first, the device is good; second, other than the frequency, there must be something else that stopped the device to detect the sensors on my BRZ. azndavepgh also noticed the same issue in this post: https://www.ft86club.com/forums/show...31&postcount=4 -------------------------------------------------------- Enough story, HERE IS THE IMPORTANT PART: (and solution) I was somehow randomly chose the option 1: 01/2020 - 12/2021 (Snap-in 315MHz) for Camry, and forgot to turn the device off. And I walked by my BRZ, it start beeping!! IT FREAKING WORKED!! https://i.ibb.co/8zptLs4/IMG-9854.jpg UPDATE: The ID is my rear left tire and I was using the front left option to start the sensor detecting. This is only for demonstrating that the Camry setting will work with '22 BRZ. Sorry for some confusion here and thanks MikeNSX2 for pointing it out! I also tried on OEM sensor, it also worked. So, both Tire Rack T6 & OEM will work under the Camry setting. So I think we can say this new sensor is definitely from Toyota. Then I connected the OBD2 cable, trying to read the sensor ID under Camry setting, it also worked. https://i.ibb.co/8KXzkB9/IMG-9845.jpg So then I followed the sensor relearn guide from Autel, I completed the relearn procedure without trouble. I'm not going into too many details here, since you can find a lot of guides online. When it finally going to write the new sensor IDs in, it asked me if I wanted to save as a 2nd set. I selected yes. Then I read the id from ECU again to make sure it wrote something in. I got the same OEM IDs, but there are '(1st)' after the IDs (forgot to take a photo for this one). I tried triple press the TPMS button, the warning light flashed a few times and then disappeared. Then I read the ECU again, and check this: https://i.ibb.co/86b8mVN/IMG-9855.jpg The second set has a '(2nd)' after their IDs. They've been written in. After the relearn was completed, I drove only ~2 miles, it shows up correctly in the dash. https://i.ibb.co/2NrDpkv/IMG-9857.jpg And I just canceled the dealership appointment and saved a few bucks!:happyanim: (yeah but spent 200+ bucks on the tool lol) ----------------------------------------------- I noticed that some people found that the triple press TMPS button doesn't work. https://www.ft86club.com/forums/show...6&postcount=23 It is because if the 2nd set isn't present, the triple press will do nothing at all. You have to register the second set to make the switch function work. I assume that other brands of TMPS tools might also work, too. As long as it has OBD relearn function. Can anyone try on another brand? Finally, hope the TPMS part can help some people out. Thanks! |
Great luck finding this accidentally! And thanks for sharing.
This should probably also work if you choose some other Toyota model that uses the same sensors: Quote:

Did the Canadian Sport-Tech version not come with TPMS? I can't say I've ever found a menu that showed me tire pressures. Also since changing to winter wheels without TPMS I haven't seen any dummy lights on the cluster. Im very confused how I don't have TPMS if I bought the upper Sport-Tech model.

Good to know!! I'm going to give this a shot.
Edit: Mine worked to clear the TPMS warning light, but I was never able to pull pressures and the light did eventually return. But I'll give the Camry setting a try. Thanks! |

Personally I'm happy to not have the persistent warning light that I had on my FRS. |
Great write-up!

Probably a stupid question, but how did you write back to the ECU after you scanned the new sensors? I have the same tool and I've gotten as far as it reading the new sensors just fine, but when I'm trying to use the Relearn option it gives me a bunch of instructions where one step says, "write the new sensors to the ECU" and I can't figure out how to do that :D
The online guides imply it should just pop up a write option when I connect it to the vehicle via OBD, but that doesn't seem to be happening. EDIT: Nevermind - repeated the whole procedure again and this time it successfully wrote them. |
lewesyru,
Thanks for the great write-up. A question though... In your first picture, it shows the front left tire ID as 4DEA9CB In the second picture, it shows the front left tire ID as 5304B6C. In the third picture, it shows the front left tire ID as 424A023. I'm going to Discount Tire tomorrow to have them read the sensor IDs (which I will write down) and then go to my my Subaru dealer and have them register them to my car. How will I know which tire sensor ID #s are correct for my BRZ? Yours were all different. |

That said, in his three pictures, all of which show the front left tire sensor ID number, well... they are three different numbers showing as the front left sensor ID. |
