Shifter
 
Supposedly the new GR86/BRZ has a better shifter then the gen1.

Less "notchy" and better cross shifting action.

Are they interchangeable with the gen1. Thoughts? :bonk:

The upgrade in the shifting action is likely done in the transmission. I would guess that the shifter itself has the same measurements as the old one, but is different because they redesigned the reverse lockout mechanism.

I found the shifter to be incredibly stiff and notchy when changing gears in a dealer's showroom demonstrator, to the point of being a deal-killer. So a question for owners: Does it feel considerably more fluid and easier to shift once the car is running? There's no opportunity to test drive one around here to find out for myself.

Do you consider that the engine is not running and the synchronization does not work properly and the transmission oil is also cold?

Shifter feels very similar to the old car, if anything it’s easier to shift.

I'd wager that's a bad sample. It shifts like the first gen. I put in Motul gear 300 75w90 oil and feels better (less abrasion) in the lower gears. There's still the off notch here and there but overall it's a decent gearbox and shift action.

IMO the shifter is improved compared to the first gen.

Generally more crisp shifting and no more issues getting into 2nd that the original had occaisionally.

Some of the best shifters can feel horrible when the car is stationary and cold.

Well my car is a manual and there isn't that much difference in effort and smoothness on/off, hot/cold, hence the question.

I haven't really driven any other manual cars (just an older Golf and my buddy's VA STi), and it feels snappy and responsive to me compared to those. I have also noticed, that as I've worn it in in the last ~400 or so miles, there is a little less "crunchiness" in the gears, particularly 1st and 2nd.
