Last week an old guy brought in a CRV with EVAP leak codes.

I scan it, codes are not in active or pending, just in permanent, not wanting to diag the car for nothing, I touch nothing, clear the codes and run the EVAP self test. It passes, system is normal. I ask, and it turns out he messed with the fuel cap but when the light didn't turn off he brought it in thinking it was something else.

So my question to you is: What it your ideal outcome? You bring it in and pay 20 minutes of diag time + scan tool to be told it's your filler cap not tightened all the way, or you bring it in and pay 20 minutes diag time + scan tool to be told it WAS your filler cap and you brought it in for nothing.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, Very Small Leak is a 0.020" hole, be prepared to guess and wait. if you don't wanna, then don't touch it at all.

evap codes can be a total bitch.

or they can be super simple.

Location says New Jersey, I'm guessing you never felt the texture of your own gas cap's cheap plastic before or even knew that it hangs on the gas door for convenience?

Is your check engine light currently on?
Go home, turn off the car, pop the gas door, take a deep breath, touch the gas cap and feel it. It's not going to hurt you. Unscrew it, then screw it back in and make sure it clicks in place. Now spend the next 200-300 miles driving your car at many different conditions: highway, city, hills, various weather conditions(temps), accel, decel, etc. If you're lucky enough to have triggered the car's self-monitoring system, and if it was just a gas cap tightening issue, then the light should go off.
