Track wheel that clears performance package
 

Howdy,

I just bought a 2020 BRZ w/ Performance Package. It is replacing my 2002 RSX Type-S as a track car (Laguna Seca primarily, perhaps Thunderhill).

I want to get better tires before running it out there and like the RPF1s (have them on the Acura). I read here that 17x9 +35 does not clear the performance package brakes even with spacers, so I think I would have to drop width to 17x8 +35 which apparently fits with no issues.

Some other wheels (Like Gram Lights 57CR) fit in 17x9 +35/38, but weigh a good 3+ lbs more. I am at a bit of a crossroads here.

1.) Is it better to lose the extra tire width for the lighter wheel?
2.) Are there other good lightweight options in 17x9 that fit with PP that I should look into besides RPF1? Guessing there is something but haven't seen in in the various wheel threads I've scrolled through here.

APEX or 6UL.

Rigidity > weight.

Don't let more weight scare you, especially if you're riding berms, or occasionally go off.

On my 2019 86 TRD I am running the Konig Hypergrams 17x9, 40mm Offsets and I aggressively frequent the curbing.

If you find a 35mm or less wheel that fits, please post up!

Thank you for pointing me to the Apex wheels, the EC-7R look amazing and only ~1.9 lb heavier than the RPF1. That looks like the move for me.

I see that I could go with 9" (stock suspension) or 9.5" wide (requires coilovers, I *think*). I don't have coils yet. Is it worth getting them to do the 9.5" wheel? Do I even want a wheel that wide? Eventually want to set this car up with a Jackson racing supercharger.

EDIT: And maybe a dumb question, but I assume the 17" is a better option than 18" for track purposes? Assume that's the case but the 18" in gold looks amazing...

Wedsport tc105 is pricier, but another popular option.

Generally speaking, 17" tires are more affordable than 18" ones. There seems to be bigger jumps around 18 and 19". That's one thing to factor in - especially when considering autox/track sets of wheels.

Second is weight. 18 wheels are generally the same weight, if not heavier than 17". 18" tires are generally the same weigh as 17" or heavier. The net result is an overall package that's heavier. Especially on a lower power car, you don't want have way too much tire than you realistically need.

With people breaking axles as it is, going with a wider tire and heavier wheel would mean more stresses on the axles if you are going to be tracking the car. Personally I wouldn't go wider than 17x9.

Yeah I've been running 17x9 with 245 re71r tires and haven't had issues or seen issues at that size. I did have some 18x10s on there with some 265 nittos on them but it didn't seem to have an issue with them although I didn't track or autocross with those wheels.

Perfect. I think the 17x9 EC-7R is exactly what I want then. Now to wait for it to come back in stock! :P

I'm glad you mentioned this. Finding the weight of wheels is pretty easy. Unfortunately rigidity information is much more difficult to find. I know lack of flex is a huge benefit to carbon wheels, but that's not really a realistic option for 86 owners. So how do we figure out which wheels are the most rigid? I discussed this with Ryan at Apex a couple weeks ago, but he didn't have any info for me. He said he'd check with his engineers. I thought that would be a great topic to add to their already excellent blog.

That should provide a good start for a list of stuff confirmed to fit. you can then shop for your choice of style, weight, size, etc etc etc.
