Intake resonator??

First, I searched... ;) No, I'm not talking about the "noise generator". I'm curious as to the purpose of this box pointed to in the pic. Is it for harmonics, or some other function? I want to yank it it for underhood cleanliness, but am unsure of its true purpose..Attachment 12602

Thanks!

Is that your intake?

Yessir

Looks so much better without that stupid T-off for the noise generator.

Subaru references the whole part as the "Air Cleaner Case Sub Assy". I would assume it is there for noise and water diversion.

Like the old snorkus they had in the Impreza models.

It be nice to have your intake without the straight section (one piece), and in black.
None the less nice.

Maybe, but the Impreza snorkus clearly deflected airflow in such a way that any debris or liquid water would drop into it's gullet. This looks like it's plumbing connects to the side of the filter box, not even a low point or anything... Now I'm also curious wtf it is...

Perrin's intake thread says it's a resonator. They have another pic showing the snorkus, but it's more of a nutsack that hangs from the large intake tube, just underneath where the interior noise generator splits off.

It is a helmholtz resonator. It is there for sound reasons and possibly to tune the resonance of the intake to aid in airflow. There are actually 3 of them, two are smaller and are behind the front bumper, just about all cars have them. They are not for water. Intakes are often finely tuned like an instrument, changing the shape could result in less airflow although I doubt it would make a significant difference. Google helmholtz resonator for more info.

The resonator helps with the airflow into the engine. As the valves open and close quickly the closing of the valves sends a shockwave of high pressure air back in the opposite direction of airflow. The resonators are made so that the shockwave reaches the end of the intake and bounces back at just the right time to push air in during valve opening.

Thanks all, looks like it's staying for now...

haha just coming across this. did the stock tube & noise maker replace recently with perrin tube. when I did I couldnt figure why that thing was there and ripped off that box that connected to the airbox. cracked the plastic a little bit. and used duct tape to seal it up for the time being.

You can buy plugs for hole left behind. Looks a lot cleaner that way.

thanks for the link. i unfortunately broke the rivets but that single plug looks way cleaner than the grey tape currently sealing that end
