Couldn't get front toe set because of worn out tie rods?

So I got some winter tires put on today and asked for an alignment and the shop said they couldn't get my front toe settings to 0 because my tie rods were worn out? I've never heard of this, but is this something worth upgrading or should I just get OEM replacements?

It’s common wear and tear for tie rods to go. Yes, when they’re worn out, the tech will have a hard time setting the toe. Replace your tie rods.

So I'm considering these to replace the inner tie rods:

Also considering these:

However, it seems the whiteline roll center kit is more for lowered cars whereas the suspension I've bought is only going to lower my car by less than an inch. Should I just stick to OEM?

Yeah I would go with OEM. But that’s my opinion though.

holeeray: i'd think of those Megan tie rod ends only for need of slightly more steering angle .. and with some wheel/tire widths you may get rubbing when steered to lock

Whiteline makes good stuff.

Sounds like a lazy/greedy shop to me. Almost 100k miles on my 8 year old hooptie and the tie rods are fine.

I replaced my tie rods at 150k but if I could do it again I would replace the whole steering rack, as that comes with the new tie rods. $380 vs $150 or something like that.

If you are lowered, go with the Whitline. If not OEM or quality aftermarket.

If it's never been aligned, there's a good chance they could be seized and the shop didn't want to remove them or heat them to unseize them.

Yeah, I'm starting to feel this may have been it. I've got 36k on mine. They didn't even offer me a printout to see where my alignment was, just said that the toe "wasn't that bad".

if your tie rods are worn out at 36k miles, you're going to have a bunch of other suspension related problems. jump any creeks lately?

You joke but a friend of mine did that in his Toyota and hurt his wheel bearings.

So hurt they were rotating at such an off-angle that the spokes of the wheel were smacking against the brake caliper!
