Burnt seat heater bulb?
 

Hello again everyone,

One of the bulbs on the seat-heater switch panel burnt out on my 86.. Anyone knows whether these can be changed?

Yeah you can replace it very easily.

Since paying 50 bucks to replace a bulb isn't my cup of tea, I looked at a couple of bulb replacement how-to's on Subaru forums (apparently these switches have been around since the late 90's :) ).

These are decently comprehensive, but none of them indicates what bulb to purchase. They're 12V "grain of wheat" type bulbs, but I don't know what their intensity is, or whether several sizes exist. Anyone here knows ?

I've ordered a set of bulbs similar to radioshack 7219 / 2721092 (there are no radioshacks here).

They're 3mm diameter grain of wheat bulbs, 6mm long, rated at 12v / 60ma. Let's hope this works.

I finally got around to taking care of this issue this afternoon.

Turns out it's super easy. Both seat heater switches can be taken out by removing the gear lever trim, and unclipping them through the opening.

Then you just take them apart (you can do it from the upper or lower part of the switch, I found the latter easy), remove the blue rubber with the bulb, swap the bulb for a new one, and voila!

Also, it's better to change both bulbs at the same time, as the standard grain of wheat bulbs found online or at retailers are a bit brighter than the stock ones.

just curious, can those incandescent grain of wheat bulbs with a LED that'll last years longer?

yes you could, but it involves soldering, and SMD resistors.

Also, FWIW, these are white bulbs, there's a small orange screen on the switch's "window". You'll need to remove it if you want to put a coloured bulb.

Alex I was going to be sarcastic and say “Wow look at me I’m fancy I have seat heaters!” But then you opted to replace the bulbs for $2 and totally redeemed yourself. [emoji1][emoji23]
And I also think it’s awesome that Subaru has been using the same switches for so long. That’s why our cars feel like brand new 1990’s vehicles. [emoji1]

I'm having the same issue with the driver's side heated seat switch and I can't justify spending $50 for a switch. Is your bulb still working after this fix?

Also, what bulbs did you use to replace the OEM one with? The link for the bulbs on radioshack does not work anymore. Any information is much appreciated!

Still worked when I sold the car almost four years later.

As for the part number, I think it was radio shack 272-1092. Good luck with the repair ;)
