Do I need to change bolt and seal for Perrin crank pulley install
 
Bought a Perrin pulley. I found this install video where he says you need to replace the seal and bolt during install. He also torqued it like crazy with a breaker bar to the point that the bolt is wobbly when the car is on.

Wondering is this the right way to install it? Or should I just follow the instructions that came in the box? Do I need to replace bolt and seal? Thanks

Technically, it is a stretch bolt and should be replaced.

That being said, I have used the same bolt 3 times now. If your car is high mileage, I would probably go ahead and replace the seal while you are there. If it looks good and is not leaking don't worry about it, just be mind full of the seal when installing. And torque it properly.

The manual mentions the

-timing belt housing seal
-spacer o ring
-bolt.

It says to put in a new spacer o ring. But it didn’t say if the seal and bolt need to be replaced or can be reused.

It's worth the pocket change to just replace the bolt. No sense in taking a risk when it's 100% avoidable

You don't need a new bolt, but it is a good idea to install a new one if you have a highly mileage car.

Switched to stock to see if I could tell a difference. Couldn't so left it on.

The main screw is perfectly fine. Mileage has absolutely nothing to do with it. There is an important section in all good documentation that explains how to use it. A common convention is that black dot. In the exploded parts diagrams, all items can be considered reusable unless expressly indicated by that symbol. :thumbsup:

I think I misinterpreted the torque+angle spec as being a stretch bolt. I guess necessarily it doesn't have to be. The manual does indeed show it is reusable :bonk:

Yes the manual says it is reusable. It doesn't say anything about high mileage. I just prefer to change bolts in such kind of components for the peace of mind.

Arp also makes a replacement crank bolt.
