Swapping 2016 MT engine into 2013 MT

Just pulled the motor since the one in the 2013 blew. Is the 2016 engine a direct swap into the 2013? Both are MT. Is there anything i need from the 2013 to make it work? I dont need to flash anything to the ECM if im using the old ecm & tranny right?

Not even gonna bother with the 2017+ motors since there a ton of work involved and i just want to get the car running. Then i’ll probably build a engine and slap the turbo back on

Should be a straight easy swap. No need to flash the ECM. If you can grab the trans with the motor as well, that will make it an even easier swap.

I crashed my FRS at the track, bought a BRZ with a spun bearing. I swapped the motor and trans from my FRS to BRZ and had it running on a Monday evening after work.

Are there issues with trans not working if theyre from different years?

@Dave-ROR and @Opie have dealt with this one and gave us this gem of a post about some harness differences for 2013, 2014, and 2015/16 MYs using newer coilpacks: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...2&postcount=74

Nope. Just a little work involved if swapping over some parts or removing them if your replacement engine didn't have the same transmission option. Manuals just have a block-off plate.

If the 2016 engine is complete you shouldn't need anything from the '13, it will bolt in and run perfectly. As a bonus you'll get the updated coil packs/harness. Just remember that there are some minor actual part #/harness connector differences between the two engines, so when you go to get engine parts be sure to look up parts for a 2016 not a 2013.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I just completed the 2016 engine swap into the 2013 and everything plugged and play. Literally didn't have to change anything.

P.S. I was also able to get a tune for my flexfuel kit too so didn't have to drain all the E85 from the tank.

Nice. This is the route I want to go with my 2014 when it blows up. Thanks for the confirmation of ease.

Thought about the '17+ motor, but I've heard it's not worth it for all the hassle.

'17+ should be plug and play, but may need a tune or a '17+ ECU to make the 2017 power.

Definitely not plug and play. I spent many hours looking online regarding the differences and concluded you have to take apart the timing cover and many other things to swap parts.

I came upon this video, and its very very detailed. Guy uses 2019 engine but swaps over all the 2013 components to make it work. Worth watching if you have the time and need to do the swap.

Unfortunately not plug and play from the various people I've seen do it.

I know you say that if the one could get the transmission it would make the swap easier. Other than separating the engine from the transmission, is there an issue, say with the computer having to be reprogrammed/flashed, etc.?

Reason I ask is that I am in the same boat that I have a spun bearing and need a replacement motor. I have a 2013 FRS and am able to locate a 2015 motor (not planning on getting the tranny). Just researching to ensure that
this is possible with no issues.
