i forgot about the freevalve system. it's incredible we haven't seen anything similar yet in any other car.

It would be interesting to see a cost breakdown. The Freevalve system would replace the camshafts, variable valve timing systems and timing belts/chains. The motors would be more compact making packaging easier, crash-safer, etc. weight would likely decrease too.

It could be reliability, as even Koenegsegg wasn’t using Freevalve in all their vehicles. It could be the cost to license the technology. It could be the cost in general, but then again, I would imagine it existing on luxury cars or supercars by now.

While freevalve is really friggin cool, there are quite a few expensive challenges to overcome when implementing it.

One is that air is compressible. Being a pneumatic system acting against pretty stiff springs, you need VERY high pressures. On an engine. All engines develop leaks due to vibration and temperature changes, and other factors I'm not going to get into.

Second is that air has mass, momentum, and is not a solid. Meaning one end of a column of air only reacts as fast as the pressure wave from the other end can reach it (this is technically also true for solids, but the speed of sound in solids can be quite high). The fun part is the speed of sound changes with temperature and other such factors. This can be mitigated with small distances, but less space means smaller components, in turn decreasing the amount of pressure that can be applied.

Third is air can be humid or dusty with interesting effects on small electronics. How pure does that air need to be?

There are a few more, but I'm sure you got the point. I'm a bit skeptical it's ready for primetime, but if anyone could pull it off, the mad scientist that is Koenigsegg is he.

they said in the video they're working with "an AI company from texas" to control the freevalve system, it's just that complex.

Did anyone catch the part where he said it can run as a two stroke at some speeds? That's a really great use of camless valve actuation, being able to switch from two to four stroke. Imagine you're gunning it, and suddenly the exhaust note goes up an octave in pitch, then back down XD

Koenigsegg's Tiny Electric Motor Makes 335 HP and 443 LB-FT of Torque
Dubbed the Quark, the motor weighs just 63 pounds.

If they can get batteries smaller, lighter and more powerful, it will be the end of ICEs. Imagine a Miata with one of these up front and a small battery pack.

Really, at that point, the engine is just a range extender and a noise maker. Why replace a more, power-dense motor with a less, power-dense engine? I would put a motorcycle engine that revs to 15k if I was to put a engine in the car to make a hybrid.

A VQ37 weighs 430 pounds. For 441 pounds, you could have 7 of these motors. That is 2,345 hp and 3,101 tq, if the math was additive. The engine is just not needed in any way except for noise and range.

yep, something that small, put it right between the motor and trans. regen braking, and electric power boost!
