Should I let dealer change propeller shaft/transmission.
 

Hey guys. The dealer wants to do some major work on my car and I wanted to get some of your opinions. So here is the backstory:

I went in initially for a simple battery check since my car dies very easily and I thought my alternator was bad and they said the battery test failed. Easy fix, they can just change the battery for me. But since I was already there, I mentioned there being a small pop noise I hear in the rear of the car every time I back out of my driveway in the cold mornings. I thought it was something with the suspension so I told them that.

1 day later I checked in to see if the car was ready for pickup and I was told that they did a test drive and found the noise to be caused by the propeller shaft and transmission mounts, which was super surprising to me. Fast forward to today, the car has been at the dealer for 3 weeks coming up to 4, and I'm being told by my service rep that my propeller shaft may have been bent, I have no idea how and they finally got the parts but it will be a two day job. I thought propeller shafts are super easy to switch out or am I wrong? And if changing it does not fix the problem they may have to replace my transmission.

Now this has gotten way more serious than I have intended to go in for and have no idea how they diagnosed a sound I heard from the rear of the car all the way to changing the transmission. Would you guys just let them do all this work or would it be smarter to leave it the way it is if I don't believe there's anything wrong with it? This is all under warranty. And my car is only a 2017 with 25k miles..

If it's under warranty just let them finish it. Maybe the original shaft was one of those cancer-causing units....

My car has an occasional popping sound when backing out of driveway. It's done it for 6 yrs though. Probably suspension and axle slightly disagreeing

Does it happen when your clutch first engages with a little bit of gas?

yep I get it too, along with thousands of other noises...personally I just think it is another clunk to live with, who cares :iono: most situations involving "i hear something weird" + having the dealer diagnose & solve usually don't go well.. otherwise you'll be going down the rabbit hole if you start chasing noises on this platform

Let them do anything and everything they want. Now you have ammo if anything ever goes wrong with anything they touched. Priceless.

encourage them to change the struts, and the brakes, just in case.

I could see how a bent prop shaft could eff the transmission since it would essentially be shaking things up.

But a bent propshaft would be giving you symptoms driving at speed, not just slowly backing out. Maybe if it was a bad u-joint? Not sure.

I guess if it's all being covered under warranty let them do it, so long as you trust their work. I would ask for a thorough explanation of how they came to their conclusions.

It does sound like you are their lowest priority given how long they have been taking. Removal and replacement does not take long, so multiple days doesn't make sense unless they need to wait for parts to be delivered.

Anyway, if they keep dragging their feet just call every day for an update until they get the hint.
