Oil operating temperature and oil cooling
I have read in several threads that the oil temperature which is shown trough the OBD 2 port, being measured at the sandwich plate, is in fact 5 to 10° hotter than the actual temperature in all the engine and / or at the sump.
Does anybody know more about this? is it true / false / in between? That could generate an issue because, after installing an hks oil cooler with a thermostatic sandwich plate set to 80°C, now the oil temp (which I read trough the OBD) is alwyas around 79 -- 82° C during normal road driving or highway.. If the above story is true it means than that the oil never reaches operating temp? could this create some issues? I often track my car but i would not want to go around doing "normal" driving and damage the engine because it runs 70% of the time at a sub optimal oil temp. Also keep in mind that now ambient is 30°. during winter i was going to cover the radiator...but i am having doubts that I might have to do it already. any opinions? |
Grab a infrared temp gun.
Super handy at the track to check your tyres as well. On my old Skyline I needed to block off the air to oil cooler with a blanking plate for street use during the colder months. I would remove it for the track, I forgot to block it off one time coming home from Wakefield Park, IIRC my oil temp on the hwy was at 60°c, yes, when I saw that I stopped and put the blanking plate back on. I like my oil somewhere between 100-115°c, easier said than done though. |
Over cooling is why I run the Forester oil cooler. Or if I change it, I'd go for the Jackson Racing dual radiator oil cooler.
