OFT E85 Startup issues
So I have installed the E85 tune and recently I have been getting weird startups. (Installed for ~1000 miles) I let the fuel pump run for a second before actually starting the car and still I have issues starting up, takes 3 or 4 turns to actually start up. Is this normal? Weather here has been sitting around 70f

Short answer. its normal

The E content goes up in the summer but if you have some unusually cool mornings for a few random days it can struggle. One of these days I will apply the cranking tables Steve just linked to. I just dread going through the learning phase after a flash so I’ve been sucking it up with slow cranks. I’m in Florida so at the worst it takes 2 cranks. I think I will apply the fix when winter gets closer.

The reason that E85 is such an excellent fuel is that it requires a lot of heat energy to vaporise, so it essentially 'sucks' heat out of the air as it vaporises the fuel, cooling the air as it does so, and we all know the benefits of a cold charge.
The flip side is that on cold mornings, there isn't enough heat to vaporise the fuel. After a few attempts, the compression warms up the system a bit and she fires. Also, if you don't like the loud 'cold start' idle, just give it a bit of throttle (~2000rpm). Nice and quiet. |
