Clicking noise from the rear
So I searched around, google, youtube and forum, on this plastic-sounding "clicking" (well, more like a box of capsule pills being shaken once to be accurate) noise that seems to be coming from the rear that I recently just noticed. From the research, signs point to CV joint so I went to take a look at them but they were very clean and doesn't seem damaged. Looked up videos but none of the sounds are similar.
So I went out for a drive to record the sound to show you guys. It took over 45 minutes of driving to finally managed to record a few seconds of it. It's not consistent and not easy to replicate. How it seems to come out is if I step on the throttle while the car is already in gear and moving. Here's the video: https://youtu.be/7F7JKC8ls3A It's only within the first 25 seconds. You can hear it ONCE at the 5 second mark then once again at the 13 second mark. Only at the instant when I gave it throttle. It's much more audible in person than the video suggests. Maybe this is actually normal and the car have actually been doing this like all the weird rattles and clunks this car seems to have but I finally picked up on this one. If you guys can take a listen and let me know your thoughts and point me in the right direction, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! |
I watched the vid with headphones, I didn't hear anything abnormal.
Even at the 5 and 13 second mark. Maybe it's your rear deck? There is a TSB for it. other than that I don't know. |
Oh I guess I should mention it's not really "clicking" (as in a continuous sound) but only at the instant I step on the throttle and then goes away until I can repeat it again. I guess it's more like a loud "tick" from a clock. Oh yea, and I've checked the rear deck, under the trunk, all the plastic bumper caps/plugs and they were all snug in place as well.

I couldn't hear your noise in the video but, I too have a similar metal clinking.
My guess is it's the exhaust hitting something (happens at high load stabs on the throttle meaning a lot of movement in the engine components). Out of curiosity what mods do you have (spare no part please). I see it's a Kouki BRZ, I have a Kouki 86 too. |
My car is actually completely stock.
I'm going back to listening to the video now after walking away from it... and I guess it's so faint, it could just be passed off as video "noise" (sounds like an audio "scratch"). So even if you could hear it, probably won't be able to pick off what it could be since it's so vague. Okay, different video but same day. https://youtu.be/bFWp2UHX4iE Very short. I think you can hear the mechanical "tick" a couple of times at the start (1 -3 seconds) and another "tick" at the 12 second mark. Every time it's when I stab the throttle. |
I can't hear anything abnormal.

May not be the same thing but I throw it out there anyway.

I hear it. I would check under your seats and in the tray under the cargo cover for something loose shifting and clicking against something metal when you hit the accelerator like that. If it really bothers you, I would also get underneath and wiggle the exhaust to see if it's knocking against something.
Otherwise I would ignore it. Turn up your radio. |
Get a Perrin 2.5 resonated CBE I love mine!! As for the clicks, is your rear license plate frame tight?

Did the emergency trunk release come out of its slot inside the trunk?

I have a click in my rear but it's a lot higher pitched than yours. My research has concluded it's the axle nuts which are apparently weak on this cars and new ones should fix it.

These cars make so many noises, fun car buy annoying as fuck

I have 95k miles and I feel like the noise has stayed the same. It hasn't been louder or different. If the noise changes or the car handles differently then I will try to fix it. Maybe someone that fixed the axle nut and had the clicking go away can comment? |
Would this clicking/axle nut issue be present on a 2017 car? I've had this issue as far back as last year. It's driving me nuts. I went underneath and couldnt find anything rubbing or close in terms of exhaust, bolts, powertrain etc. The only thing that had play was my driveshaft. I can clock it about an 1/8 of a turn back an forth. Is that normal lash/play for a driveshaft?
