Rattle when i turn off the engine

I have a rattle every time i turn off the engine.

It feel like the exhaust system vibrate with the engine and rattle on the frame or whatever.

A budy of mine who work for subaru for many years will look at it soon but for now i want to know if im the only one with that problem.

Thanks !

I've never heard of any noise when I turn off the engine. I would freak out too if mine makes a noise like that.

Ok then it seem that im the only one :(

I will try tonight to hold the shifter when shutting off the engine maybe its related to the shifter linkage anyway i will find a solution.

thx

I tried to put my hand on the shifter but no luck i felt nothing and the ratlle was still there. It seem it is coming from the engine bay or maybe lower near the firewall :(

The exhaust components, especially the cats will crackle, pop or tick when cooling down. Easily mistaken for rattles or a problem if you've never heard metal contracting as it cools. Sometimes it can be really loud. This is completely normal in most cases.

Here's an extreme example. You'll hear a particularly loud one but if you listen closely, you'll note other less intense pops. They will range from louder to more softer ones.
If you live in an area where it gets cold in the winter, and you have central air and heat, you'll hear your metal ducts within your home make similar noises when the heat turns off.

The sound actually emanates from breaking atomic bonds, and the subsequent rearrangement of the crystalline matrix within grains. This change occurs so quickly, that the material produces a pressure wave (sound wave) that you can hear as a popping sound.

I have the same rattle, I know what your talking about.. I assumed it was exhaust o.o

mashal 08-02-2012 02:04 AM

And it's no pop noise, it's an actual rattle.. You can definitely feel the car shake

CircuitJerk:

Its really a rattle not a crackling pop or whatever sound from sheet metal cooling down it only happen when the engine turn off, for a brief 2 second i hear toc toc toc from under the central console.

I have an appointment in 2 weeks i will post the solution right after.

Thanks guys

Okay. I see. A little short on the details originally. Hard to tell on a forum.
All the best.

try stepping down ur clutch and turning off your engine. it may help.

My car is at the dealer right now and the sound is coming from inside the fuel tank. Weird because at the beginning the sound was coming from the firewall then some days later from the back... Anyway they need to reschedule an appointment for further investigation.

i will let you know !
