OEM Oil filters
Has anyone compared the OEM oil filters?
In Canada our Toyota brand filters are made in Taiwan, the Subaru filters are made in USA. Has anyone cut them open to compare construction, number of pleats, etc? |
Nope, never.

Due to previous issues with USA made Subaru filters I buy always original Japanese oil filters only, just in case!

Tokyo Roki only. Subaru PN 15208AA130
Prior made in US ones were garbage (like 5-10 years ago iirc), so I don't take any chances. Not sure if they have updated since then. |
Subaru dealership near me only sells the japanese made ones, P/N 15208AA130
Had no idea they even had a version that was USA made. In case your dealership doesn't sell them they can be found here in CAD: https://www.ft86motorsports.com/suba...il-filter.html |

If you have amazon prime this is the same one: https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Subar.../dp/B00ESTFGMQ Idk how canada is cost wise with amazon prime and such but it's near the cost of the ft86motorsports version and of course almost everyone has a prime account, I bought 3 of them for the year, as I change my oil around 3 times a year with e85 and the mileage I drive, drain plug gaskets are also easy to get on prime, because when you order them at once 2 day shipping is grouped in. I use a fumoto valve though, so oil changes are a breeze. |
I too use the Japanese Subaru filters. I will stick with them. This from my last oil analysis after 15 months and about 7k miles:
"..A trace of insolubles shows excellent oil filtration.." |

My local dealership sells them for ~$12. FT86 is only worth the discounted price if I'm buying other things and can get up to the $149 threshold for free shipping. I bought 3 last time so I have at least a years worth of filters for changes on hand. I too put in a fumoto valve on my last change. It will take quite a few changes to break even on the cost of washers, but the ease of changing oil now far outweighs the cost of the valve imo. |
Thanks for the recommendations everyone!
If nobody has cut them open to compare yet I may just do so before my next oil change... |

I love the fumoto 108 as well, to anybody with e85 as well, makes it easier to change while the motor is still "hot" as well so I can get more of the oil out easier. |

Looks like the 130 has 63 pleats vs. the 160/15A with only 56 pleats. https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12392 |
On my last change I did A WIX 57830. I will be changing it this weekend or next. When I do I will cut it open and see how it looks. My understanding is it has a lot of media in it and the bypass pressure matches the OEM filter. Going to the dealer for the filter is a pain for me. I guess I could plan better and get OEM off Amazon though.
