E85. Do you test it? Do you use a flex fuel kit?
Finally found a gas station near me, 12 miles away, that carries E85 but they can't tell how often it is tested.
In the US by law it can be as low as E51 and I'd like to know what I'm putting in the tank before I do. Testing it is not difficult but time consuming. Do you use a flex fuel kit or do you just select the Stage 2+ on your OFT as long as you know that the fuel is E75+ ? Thank you. |
I don't test mine, but based off the readings I'm sure it's closer to E50 than E85

Flex Fuel kit all the way. Take the guesswork out of it. My station usually is about 70-80%.
|
Just get a flex fuel kit.
|
I think in Cal the min is 70%. Mine is usually around 80%. To be safe, I would get the kit and tune. It is very cool being able just to fill up at either and the car figures it out for me.

Thanks for the replies. Do you guys run OFT or EcuTec?
|
EcuTek.

I sure do. Flex fuel, and Ecutek.
PM me to order. |
Flex fuel kit, ECUTEC, Remote tune (Very satisfied with Delicious). The station I get E85 from generally runs in the high 70’s, low 80’s at times.
I have tuned before but trying to learn tuning for E85 plus turbo, boost control I decided to go the easy route. With those combinations one mistake could cost a lot more than paying an experienced tuner to set up everything. |

Very satisfied with my remote Delicious tune. OFT is not as capable and I only want to buy once. |
FYI ethanol grades vary from season to season (in areas with seasons), in winter fuel stations tend to have a lower ethanol to gas ratio, atomization is better in cold climates.

I have the Delicious Flex Fuel kit. The nice thing about it, is that it comes with bluetooth that you can connect to your phone to check percentage. On average I get between 65% and 75% depending on the time of year.
AFAIK our cars only can take advantage of up to 60% so anything higher shouldn't make a huge difference. I could be wrong so if I am please correct me lol. |
Good news for me. GATE Petroleum is a Jacksonville FL headquartered company with ~ 100 gas stations throughout the SE all of which carry E85 that tests consistently at E80 or better.
As long as my BRZ is within range of a GATE station I won't be needing a flex fuel kit. One issue solved. The decision between EcuTek and OFT is leaning toward the OFT for the time being and this is due to the ease of changing tune stages -E85 etc- and recovering the OE tune without third party assistance. I must also confess that the not insignificant cost Δ Is an issue at this early stage when I'm not yet certain about this project's longevity. Thanks to all for their input. |
