TRD PERFORMANCE AIR Intake. Only 2 HP improvement.

According to their testing, there was only .5 HP increase. Did Toyota Lie on their web store saying "Dyno-tested and designed to deliver an increase in both horsepower and torque for superior acceleration "

How much superior is .5HP on the acceleration?

article says 2.5 hp Gain? You still need some tuning to make the most out of it but don't expect much

Looks like about 4 hp at 6500-7000 rpm. They do also say it requires an ECU reflash to optimize gains (if any). So a tune I guess

everything requires a tune to actually work on this car, but 4 hp at the top end without a tune is pretty darn good.

I had the stage 1 oft tune with the TRD and the stock, the maf scaling required was nearly the same as stock after datalogging. It definitely lowered intake temps slightly and added more intake growl, but I'm pretty sure a drop in may have had similiar gains, or the grimspeed CAI which supposedly performs way better.

Also the only reason I got it was because I knew someone in a Toyota parts department and really wanted to get rid of the sound tube well before I got a header.

I can honestly say I didn't notice a huge difference. The car does sound better, and it cleaned up the engine bay. I like the reusable filter and factory fitment.

Paired with the hks snorkel it DOES seem to be a little better when you're winding it out, but like most intakes it isn't a great bang for the buck modification. At least this one isn't an issue while you're under warranty and it looks great while having a lifelong use filter.

Lol what did you expect

So, not everything.

tomm.brz 08-10-2018 12:20 PM

It gives a bump in power because it leans out the afr ,like most panel filters do

it probably does much much better with a tune.

tomm.brz 08-10-2018 02:12 PM

When you tune it you LL fine out that it lets enter few more air compared to the stock..a bit more yes mostly because of the restrictive stock snorkel, but it is a NA and stock filter is not globally so restrictve so you gain mostly from the tune itself than from the intake..so actually you GEt relatively more gains from the intake without a tune

Did they apply the "TRD" sticker? Everyone knows that is the TRUE source for horsepower gains...:party0030:

I'll just get a 100 stickers to go 0-60 in 1.2 seconds.

according to DSportmag's dyno runs it had a very very close AFR to the stock intake. The design is very similar to the stock intake, just that the intake box is bigger and thus greater surface area for the filter, which delivers more air to the engine. All cold air intakes for this car work roughly the same, with the exception of maybe the grimmspeed. The TRD box uses a panel filter which does not have as great of a surface area as cone filters like the K&N typhoon. The K&N for example delivers even more air than the TRD, but as a result, it leans out the mixture (duh, more air and the same amount of fuel = greater AFR). The grimmspeed is also a cone filter, but puts the MAF sensor directly inside the airbox so that the engine computer can give you more fuel to go along with the increase in air. AFAIK, the airaid, injen, and skunk2 intakes are all designed this way, but grimmspeed did the most testing for our specific platform.
