Help with exhaust system purchase

Hey All,

I have a stock 2014 FR-S. I've read and watched a ton of content on headers and cat backs. I know I love the sound of the Gruppe-S UEL header and Invidia r400 cat back.

Here is the dilema. We have emissions testing in Ontario Canada. I cannot seem to find an answer anywhere on if I can pass etest with a catless header.

If I can't, I don't mind doing a catted header and mid pipe but want to make sure I still get that awesome low tone boxer rumble. No idea where to start.

Also, I do not like high RPM raspyness or cabin drone as I use the phone a lot in the car.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I’m running the Perrin 2.5 Resonated and will be installing JDL Catted UEL and JDL Catted/Resonated Front/Over Pipe Combo in about a week. Check out some clips on the combo, it has a real nice deep tone and subie rumble without any rasp. I delt with JDL directly over the phone and email and they were great to work with. Only downside is JDL is way more than the Gruppe. I chose going Catted on both to be as safe as possible for emissions.

you most likley wont pass an etest with a catless header. The etest if i'm not mistaken checks for CELs and running without a cat throws one due to the difference in airflow. Even if you get a tune, which removes it, wont have the airflow that a stock system should have so you might fail there.

But i'm also in California, where if i change my shift knob i fail smog...

I'm in California too. The only smog testing required for me is on change of vehicle ownership according to dmv.ca.gov. Git gud

Only if you are in enhanced testing areas, mostly urban centers or the central valley.

I'm absolutely in love with my Tanabe Concept G single exit. There is ZERO drone cruising around town, the sound at WOT is louder than stock but doesn't exceed 93 db (per Tanabe) and sounds great. I also dropped 20 lbs swapping from stock.

If you like the look of single exit it is a solid choice!

Which is why I posted the map, because not all of CA is under the same rule you are suggesting.

Thanks for all of your feedback so far.

I found out we only do ECU etest here now and I'm good for another 3 years anyway.

Seems the r400 with any catless UEL sounds great as long as there is a resonator on the front pipe.

The gruppe UEL is a good choice, I plan to get that when this header gets too worn out.

The gruppe is made in the same place as the tomei

If I buy UEL header, overpipe and cat back as shops recommend, does that mean I am sticking with the stock front pipe that has a cat in it?
