Hose size for bleeding brakes
I’m flushing my brakes soon and need to know what size hose I need to attaching to the brakes.
Anyone know the diameter to get? Thanks, Shawn Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
As long as it's flexible enough, I.D. isn't critical. I use large fuel tubing from a hobby store, it's usually about $1/foot and easy to source if you have a hobby store nearby that sells nitro cars/boats/planes/helis.

I'd also like to know tubing size needed for draining brake fluid and draining coolant from the radiator. Are we talking 1/16" ID is even fine if it's flexible? 1/2"? 1"? Just a ballpark answer is needed so I can get something before I take stuff off the car to get at it.
I imagine 1/4" is fine (I have some clear tubing I bought for brewing beer) but I haven't found measurements of the barbs anywhere, so don't know if they're a lot smaller or bigger than I'm expecting. EDIT: Didn't bother searching for the radiator one, so I looked and found 8mm, but the brake flush guides don't mention a specific size. |
For brakes I use the clear fish tank air line tubing. it is flexible enough you can pop it on nice and snug.

Needs to fit on the barb of the bleeder.

5/16” ID is what I ended up using. 1/4” was a bit tight to go on.

Im doing my first flush next week, do you happen to remember what size flare nut wrench would be right for the job? (for the bleeder valve)
I think it is https://smile.amazon.com/ATE-706202-...omotive&sr=1-1 but Im not sure. |

Bleeders have a tendency to round off, or worse yet, break off in the caliper. A good quality 6pt box end wrench is best if you have room to swing it.
Or break it loose with a 6pt socket, snug it back barely, the go at it with a combo wrench. Shouldn’t have any space constraints with the wheels pulled off, I’m usually battling them from underneath with a rim right in the way. Mercedes get brakes bled every two years, we have a pressure bleeder running all day long. |
Yeah, no need for a flare nut wrench on the bleeder, there's no hard line on it stopping you from putting a box end wrench or socket over it.
I always use a socket to break it loose and an open end wrench to open/close while actually bleeding (when the rubber hose is on), then final tighten with the socket again. |
Just flushed mine a couple weeks ago. 5/16" tube and 10mm wrench/socket.
I installed SpeedBleeders which are 11mm. |

The type is SB1010 for our OEM calipers. They come two in a package, so order two packs for a total of four bleeders. US$60.00 |
