Brake groan. '17 BRZ w/ PP
I've noticed a groaning sound emanating from my brakes recently. It's most noticeable when I've just started driving. The noise seems to lessen if I'm at the end of my drive. There doesn't seem to be any change in how they work though.
I have a little over 5k miles on the car. The brakes are the stock Brembo brakes that are included with the performance package. Any idea what could be causing the noise? Surface rust? Something is caught? Something is misaligned? The weather? I live in Boston in case that matters. Should I just take it to a shop? Any reason to worry at all? Sounds are notoriously difficult to describe, and even more difficult to diagnose based on those descriptions alone. A 30 second listen can tell more than a whole thread's worth of writing. Where in Boston are you?

It's still under warranty; take it to the dealer.

https://streamable.com/svfmx It sounded better today :/ Not sure if you can even hear that well in the clip. The sound is most noticeable right before I come to a complete stop. Yesterday it was much worse on that same first stop. Leads me to think it's partly weather related. |
The best thing you can do is get someone knowledgeable to take a ride with you and listen. You can usually figure it out by the end of the block.
I've noticed that these rotors will rust pretty quickly when parked...my car will typically stay parked for the weekend and by Monday morning, the first brake application is quite grumbly. It cleans up quickly though. |
