Subaru’s synthetic oil?
Is this oil really good for 7000-7500 miles?
I bought the car @ 20,500 and they changed the oil for me, as of now i have 25,600 miles. Anyway I’m going to Houston this weekend and it’s a 300 mile drive from where I’m at, so total 600 miles back and forth. Should i change the oil before or after i come back? |

EDIT: I forgot on MY13-14 it still says 7500 intervals for oil change even then you would still be fine if you did after your trip. |

The only way to accurately tell is by getting an oil analysis. However if you're only commuting around you'll be fine. You could probably stretch it a lot more without issue. I generally change mine ~5K-7K miles but I track and drive the car hard on top of daily driving.

The Subaru 0w-20 that you can buy over the parts counter, comes in a gold colored gallon or quart bottle, is made by Idemitsu and is a good oil for daily use.
A lot of dealers including the Subaru dealer I was tech at uses a bulk 0W-20 oil, that they would source locally, so that they can use the pull down quick fill oil hoses. If you do not ask for specific oil you will get the "bulk" oil. It does not mean its total shit oil but it is not usually the same as the "Subaru" stuff that comes from the parts counter. Somewhere along the line I was told that factory fill is Eneos . https://drive.google.com/file/d/1k3S...ew?usp=sharing |

If you do not change the oil per the schedule you run the risk of being denied warranty coverage should a possible oil related failure occur. The oil will outlast the change interval by quite a margin in a street driven car but it still needs to be changed at the "recommended" interval.

I recall seeing an oil analysis done with track use at 13k and it looked like it would keep going for a few more thousand miles.
Now the question of the filter is another story. I still like doing regular oil changes to keep my engine feeling a bit smoother (probably a placebo effect) + fresh oil filter. |
I'm going to break ranks and say change the oil if you have the chance. Not out of need, per se, but more out of opportunity. While the oil is very likely fine at this point, you still aren't exactly getting ripped off with a 5K oil change interval of an unknown fill. If I was about to take a 600+ mile trip of constant rpm and engine temp, I'd prefer a nice fresh additive package in there, doing it's best to keep a motor clean and shiny on the inside. If you have 5K miles of typical stop and go daily driving, it certainly wouldn't be a BAD thing to change it before you leave, if you had the chance..
