Vented hoods and rain
Looking at options to keep under hood temps down in the summer. I've been looking at CF hoods with vents or just installing vents on my current hood.
It's my daily driver so out sits out in the weather at work, but is garage kept at night. Are there any issues with rain getting into places it shouldn't through the vents? I live in the desert and don't get a whole lot of rain. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using Tapatalk |
You'll be perfectly okay with the vents and rain, just be prepared for the engine bay to get dirty real quick lol. But if you are still worried Verus (formerly Velox) makes a Hood Vent Kit that has an optional rain guard and has data to back up the cooling capabilities, and is more cost effective than a CF Hood.

I live in Melbourne Australia which is renowned for its rainy days. Had a vented CF hood for 4 years. No rain gutters or anything - the water just pours onto the alternator. Not a single problem.
It is parked undecover during the day on weekdays, outside the rest of the time. Just go for it. |

RUnning a turbo setup though with a turbo blanket and header wrap on the down pipe. Seriously considering getting the rain guards or just hard park in the garage on a battery tender till next late April. Part of me wishes, I had jsut left the stock hood unmolested and just spent on a vented VIS hood so I could switch between the two. |
For NA, I've ran the tracspec hood vents (the largest designed for this platform) with no issues. It's sat in downpouring rain recently on my trip from Texas to Atlanta for Gridlife and fired right up.
ChinTrackDays ran the tracspec vents as well during pouring rain and constantly sat their track 86 outside with no reported issues. YMMV for FI. Not sure on how water on running hot parts does. |
Water cools down engine bay temps more than air will.

I have the works kit, so All of my exhaust and turbo components would most likely sit aft or off to the side of any vents, so rain wouldn't directly fall onto the very hot components and cause any issues with thermal stress. The only thing I was worried about with the verus kit was if the rain guards would fit since my intercooler sits RIGHT below the hood. I guess it would help to have cold rain on the intercooler. Plus this kit seems easier than fitting a new hood, swapping the hardware, installing hood pins. Thanks for the input everyone. |

Look up the little known cars... mitsubishi evo 1-10 and subaru sti "all generations with a hood scoop".
The evo's take on a lot of water with no issue ever the engine and turbo. The same goes for the sti and more so for the ones that have aftermarket hoods with both vents and a scoop. Their engine has a similar lay out and they are 100% peachy keen. So if you overlap examples of an sti engine getting wet with an evo engine that has a modified turbo set up which will take on a bunch of water through its vent hole/holes, you can easily conclude that an FA20 with a turbo located anywhere in the engine bay mixed with water will be be just fine and dandly like lead filled candy. |
