Tapping Noise After Hard Driving (Video Included)
Hi guys,
I heard this tapping noise from the engine bay after a hot lap at the track when I backed off. It went on for a about 10 seconds before disappearing. No vibrations or loss of power, just the noise for a short while. It doesn't sound like it was matched to the engine revs or road speed either. I did another session and drive the car 2.5 hours to get home afterwards with no issues at all. Any ideas what the cause of the noise is? Oil surge @ high G whilst cornering ? You have enough oil in sump or correct weight given how hard you drive & perhaps lengthy sessions ?

I'd stop driving it. Sounds like a rod knock. Can you recreate it off track so the dealer can hear it?

As you said it does not seem to be RPM related, it appeared to me it might be speed related. If it is not RPM and you are lucky you may have picked up some junk on your tire and shed it at the next hard corner. (Evan if you are not running very sticky tires someone else may have left a marble.)
Speed related noises are usually tires, brakes, diff, or driveshaft. An other unlikely possibility on our cars is a flapping body panel, but that is normally easily repeatable. |
It was during that right hand turn. Nothing to do with your engine. Sounds like wheel frequency.
