Front Pipe Install and Impressions

I wanted to post my impression of a front pipe install, sound and power differences before and after. First off; the front pipe, I purchased on eBay, it’s a ‘CNT’ 2.5 inch stainless piece with a hi flow cat. I don’t want to post the link, in case I violate a forum rule, but it should be easy enough to find.

Install: Had a friend with a lift, help with the install, otherwise this would have been a huge pain. Car has 22k on it, as of today and the exhaust bolts were pretty nasty. Wire brush and wd-40 we scrubbed them clean and took them off. Old piece slid right out. New one was in and bolted up in about 20 minutes. We went really slow, took the heat shield off, etc. Piece fit perfectly. Total install time was about 90-120 minutes.

Sound: Let me preface this with my current exhaust setup…. Tomei UEL, Tomei Overpipe, STOCK FRONT PIPE, 2.75” catback with mufflers just like the N1 (Manzo V2). Exhaust was loud before, start up especially is borderline embarrassing loud. Its worse now…wow. So loud, so much rasp and fart. Its terrible. If this were the winter time, I couldn’t start the car without being embarrassed. Warm idle is about the same, as before, Deep and loud, sounds great. Driving around, you can notice a bit more ‘growl’ but generally the sound is the same as before, under 3k. Above 3k, the sound is louder and raspier, not too bad. I may even think some of the drone from before is gone! Its just louder now, without as much cabin resonance. With all of this said….I have a ‘real’ catback with a muffler going on the car shortly, just too loud right now. I planned to do this, before I even did the front pipe, even more necessary now. Upon going WOT, the rasp is realy loud and bad. not a good sound here.

Power: I will keep it simple; I have heard claims of 5-7HP and with my setup being almost optimized, except the front pipe, I would say these claims are accurate. I am very happy spending the $200 and think I will be thrilled with a new, more mature cat back installed.

Idle and rev video.

It'll feel even better after you get a custom tune.

I will try and get one with the front pipe and then AFTER the new catback as well. Possibly this week.

Before I finished building my pc, I used bootcamp on my macbook to tweak OFT tunes in windows. Bootcamp should come as a stock program on macs, and it allows you to boot up in either OSX or Windows of your choice.

WOT with this setup sounds terrible..updated the original post. So much rasp and 'tin' sounding to it.
